i don't know how you do it, but men have this uncanny ability to glaze over during conversation, not listen to a word you say,and still get away w/acting like they were listening......my editor at my college paper does this like a champ....you can never prove it, but i could swear he was sleeping with his eyes open while he talks to me....and i just had a customer at the testing center do it, i tried to explain how to operate the computer and it wasn't 5 seconds and he was in "glazed" mode...

girls on the other hand pay tend to pay attention

This could be in part that guys are more visual; in the presence of an attractive female, we focus visually moreso than verbally, at least at first. Girls are the opposite, more verbal attentative. This is also why they can talk and talk and also why they like poetry. This is also why Playboy sells a helluva lot better than Playgirl. They could fall in love with a guys words before his body.

maybe if we throw in the word "sex" or maybe some sports lingo after a few seconds of talking , guys would come to for at least a few seconds to hear what you want them to hear

There is actually a biological reason men do this.

It all goes back to the cavemen days. Back then, things were fairly harsh. The males were hunters/warriors, and the women pretty much just existed to have children and prepare food. The men only paid attention to other men and not so much the women, simply as a matter of survival. "Holy shit, look out for that sabertooth tiger!" carries a lot more weight than "Help me clean up the cave." You see this a lot in younger male children. Mom will tell her kid to do something and he just ignores her...biologically, this is normal for him. Eventually, through social conditioning, males get better at paying attention.

This isn't just a humans-only trait -- lots of other species do the same thing (and likely thier females get just as pissed off.)

eh...maybe it is just my conversation, but then again w/girls, the convo is very lively...back and forth banter, telling stories, etc....which I see guys do (with each other) and when they want to impress a girl, but not always between a guy and a girl....but let's me give an example:

i handle advertising for our college paper so I deal(dealt----we put out our last paper this tuesday) with my editor a lot....he is a fraternity boy, popular w/the ladies, etc..."classic glazer"....basically, as mentioned in some of your replies if the words sex or we're getting sued are not in the conversation, it does not matter if I am making the next i have a dream speech....he's glazed out and usually w/in minutes.....

yet...the asst editor who I also work w/who is female, does not.....regardless of the level of the conversation....

it's not just him, guys do it all the time and honestly, I think it's amazing how they can, it's almost like they slip into this sub-dimensional world where they can appear interested and you can never really prove they aren't but their really 10,000 miles away....like i said, don't know how they do it and i'm beginning to think it is an art form.....but interesting replies to read
