It would rage me when my children would get home with tons of various projects but yet struggling to learn their spelling or reading comprehension.

Last year my son had a teacher that I could have strangled with her meaningless projects... for home, but still, it took away from study time. In one 2 week time he had 6 projects due. Between Essay and Solar System, Drug posters, Fire prevention... etc etc..

It takes time to complete these, I divide myself between two kids every night reviewing homework and studying with them... then add to that both have a drug and fire prevention project to do and then others for my son. I put my time in at home, I know that its also my responisibility to make sure that my kid studys, reads, does homework. I just think that the school is flooded with things that take away from core subjects.

Fire prevention 6 years in a row.. fine do a small lesson. It shouldn't be mandatory to do an entire week of it and home assignments, posters etc (just using this as an example there are other things that were just a waste)

Very true. I do 2 *big* projects a year (I am at a year round school) - one at the beginning, one at the end. These are projects the kids have 8 weeks to complete. But I also give some class time to do it too. Mainly because not everyone HAS support (or money for supplies) at home. Doing 6 in such a short time period is silly. What possibly can the child learn? All they are doing is struggling to get it done in time, plus the parent ends up doing a lot of it just so it gets done on time - and you can't blame them for that. Pointless for everyone all around.

The kids in my class ARE encouraged to be creative. For example - making a poster of their choice as PART of a written book report. Making models of the Hoover Dam or a mining camp - they are encouraged to do that - as part of a unit on such topics. But not in PLACE of the unit.

I think projects should be extra.. and learning the main objective in schools, just like you do.

We had two projects back to back for my son (4th grade) first was the solar system in which we chose Saturn to do the book report and project one. So I get online and get tons of info and my son and I highlight all the 'key' points and i let him type out his essay. I help him reword of course cause I know that he can't 'copy'. He did an excellent job, worked hours and all weekend on both his project and the essay.

So he comes home from school on monday and tells me his teacher (whom I've had issues with because of all kinds of wacko things she does) gave him a 'C' ... I'm like WHAT? No way you deserved a 'C' we did spell check. I proof read and everything was fine. So i call her and want to know why after so much hard work did he deserve a 'C'. Her explination....... alot of kids just copied but failed to reword their reports... I was so pissed.. so I asked her.... do I need to bring you all of the printed up info on Saturn so you can see that though we pulled Facts which you can't reword certain things the distance, moons, etc.. we didn't copy directly from anything. She said .. Oh well his report was really good, the best one we had and I just assumed he had to have copied... Well that really upset me.

In the end she agreed to reread it and assign an appropriate grade.

He was so upset because he knew how hard he worked and that he didn't copy but still recieved a grade he didnt' deserve all because honestly she's had an issue with him for reasons beyond me, he's no saint but he's a good kid. Though he is honest and like his mom if he thinks something isn't fair he will speak up which I know he's done but in a respectable manner.

Anyway.. she ended up giving him an 'A'...... which for him I was so happy but it still upset me that she discounted his ability to do his project correct the first time and lumped him with all the others that just took the easy way out.

Most public school teachers are cretins.

People just accept this shit, glad you did the right thing. Wonder what lessons the kids are learning.

LMAO - that is hysterical. "I assumed" - I love it. You should have replied - "Well, I assumed you would have actually confirmed this before assigning a grade, jackass."

Not only that, but it is HER job to teach them HOW to write a report so that they do not copy directly from a book/internet. My kids have had an AWFUL time with research skills - it is a really tough skill to do correctly, esp at 4th grade. We worked on it all year - starting back in September. FINALLY, in the last month they seem to have "gotten" it. Additionally, this is also why you assign a bibliography with the report so you can go check the source.
