When I wrestled in high school, we did zero weight lifting. Years later our coach started to realize how lifting could help in wrestling. Actually, we had more champs before they started the lifting, but that may be because other teams also started weight training. Wrestling was one of the greatest things I ever did. Its was tough, but looking back I feel acomplished at what I endured and overcame. It gave me a lot of physical and mental strength.
The key is to get into good CARDIO shape. The hardest part of wrestling is the endurance it takes. Strength is important, but having energy in the 3rd period will do much more for you. Don't just go out and jog. You need to train for short burst endurance. Do things like jump rope for 3 minutes, then rest a minute then, do sprawls or shoots for 3 minutes, rest a minute, then do some sprints/shadowbox or wrestle etc.. This type of training, trains your body for the short burst of energy you need for wrestling or even boxing. Running long distances trains your body to slowly release and conserve energy. With boxing or wrestling, you need to have semi-short bursts of energy and train your body to do that. By interval training you train your body to work hard for the period of time you need it to.
Work on grip strength also, wrist control is the holy grail to winning matches.
