Has anyone ever seen footage from the original "Blue eye/ Brown Eye Experiment"? It was staggering to see.

After ML King was assassinated, this teacher in the Midwest wanted to understand racism. She came in one day and announced to her class (2nd graders or something close): "Blue eyed kids are dumber than the rest. It's an absolute fact."

She treated them as such all day--rearranged the seats so they were in the back, monitored them on the playground (they're a combative bunch, too--never play with others those blue-eyes).

Sure enough, the blue-eyed kids couldn't do math problems they knew the day previous. Their reading suffered. Fights broke out among them.

Next day, the teacher says: "I was mistaken, it's the brown eyes who are stupid." And sure enough, the drama was repeated.

I tried to bring up the difference in EDUCATION and how profoundly that affects things--how it makes the concepts of a level playing field and "equal opportunity" kind of moot. You start off as kids and have messages reinforced every day....

Sorry to come in so late (vacation), but you just scuttled all your previous arguments here, Buksoon. By reinforcing to minorities such as blacks the idea that they require extra help to "level the playing field," you are essentially creating the same type of self-fulfilling prophecy you have alluded to in your blue-eyed/brown-eyed example above. You tell someone they need help to compensate for the unfair, biased, RACIST world around them and they come to believe it, regardless of if it's true or not.

The truth of the matter is that being a white american male or female is a better deal than baing any other race here in the u.s. So because we have it so good and these other races such as blacks and hispanics have such huge labels on them..

Actually, all other things being equal, being a hardworking black or hispanic female is "the best deal going" in the USA. You get all the benefits that hard work brings PLUS the perks of affirmative action, quota systems and, when all else fails, you can cry racism OR sex discrimination OR sexual harassment. See the problem here?

The playing field is not level. Like I said, in my home state of New Jersey, you could drive to one district and see schools in such disrepair.

The buildings themselves are falling apart. I taught in such a school and one time the ceiling came down on me. In the bathroom, no lie. I ran out with plaster from the ceiling in my hair and water from the upstairs facilities.

There's no lab equipment, not nearly enough books (and the ones are so dog-eared and yellowed), not enough desks. My students had to sit on the heating vents.

Worst of all, THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH TEACHERS. We needed about twice what we had.

And how many white kids were there? Just about none.

Move over a few districts and you will find schools that look like ski chalets. Teachers thrilled to be around students on "Preparation H" ('H' as in 'Harvard'), small classes, individual attention, not having to walk thru metal detectors, etc.....

How many white kids? Most of 'em.

I don't think is so atypical. So no, I don't think the playing field is level.

What I said was that affirmative action, quotas, etc... become a self-fulfilling prophecy, just like your blue-eyed/brown-eyed example. As such, they may do more harm than good in the long run.

Who said anything about the playing field being level? Nobody's arguing that schools in impoverished neighborhoods suck. But their parents, more often than not, are unwilling to parent and make sacrifices necessary to give their kids the opportunities they need to succeed. Do you think that the Italian, Irish, etc.. immigrants to this country in the early part of the 20th century went to the best schools and had ANY of the preferential treatments that are constantly being suggested for today's minorities? Their PARENTS instilled in them the values necessary for success. As an example, take higher education- college, graduate school, etc... It is far easier to get loans coming from a poor home than from a middle-income one. The opportunities ARE available. The reason that they're not being taken is what needs to be looked at. Stop blaming the system and start looking at the participants.

I feel no pity for blacks, they have had 140 years to get their shit together and have failed. And as far as mexicans (note... I did not say latinos, there is no country called Latin) they would have made terrible slaves they probably would have stolen all the cotton and put the farmers out of business. Think of all the whites that have done so much for the world: Einstein, Ben Franklin, Mozart, Van Gogh, Edison, Bill Gates, and think of all the other races that have contributed, ummmm...at least the Chinese invented gun powder.

I believe most people are where they are because that is where they want to be.

Black pride is a political game, period. Other Black folks care very little if at all about my success. I care little if at all about Miss Black America.

In the game of democracy....blocks of voters count. Black pageants are an offshoot of Black pride and the desire to move blocks of voters to vote.

Black poverty and hopelessness have little to do with any of this. Its a shame, but thebabydoc is right about it: the whole separatist style of the Black movement keeps Blacks thinking they don't have a chance. Sad, but they don't if they don't assimilate.

I do have to say that Hip Hop is a wonderful marketing tool, blending whites and blacks and other nationalities together so that you have one big fat pool of teenagers to suck dry. Now if you could just get Hip Hoppers to go for the pageant....naaah. Doesn't fit.

Very few teens I know of care about pageants at all.

Its an old, worn, exploitative idea.
