Worst Workout Ever

So today was supposed to be my bench day. I have been looking forward to it all week. It was supposed to be awesome, a day to be remembered.

I wake up and do what I do before every morning workout; use the hour I have between when I wake up and when I leave for the gym to devour as much protein, food, and H2O as I can. I usually come pretty close to puking every morning, it sucks. Especially when I try to force down my Animal Pak. Just not a good time.

Today was no different. I woke up and drank between a quart and a half gallon of water, a protein shake, a serving of oatmeal and breakfast bowl. All in about half an hour.

I then Chugged my pre workout blend of 4 scoops of Glycer Grow and 1 Scoop of Green Magnitude.

I started for the gym, on the verge of puking. I felt like a bloated pig, but then I remembered I had not taken my Animal Pak. Luckily I brought the packet of pills with me so I could take them when I did not feel like I was going to vomit.

About 5 minutes from the gym( I am driving in my Toyota Camry) I decide I am ready to take the Animal Pak. So I grab the first pill, it was one of the large ones and get my water ready to chase it down.

Normally I take 5-6 of these pills at once, however in the morning after I wake up and consuming all that food I figure I can only force one down.

So I throw the pill into my mouth and it gets lodged in my throat causing me to gag. I quickly chase it with the water, but the damage has been done. The single gag puts my body into ejection mode.

I spend the next minute driving 20 miles below the speed limit. teetering on the oh so familiar brink of vomiting. You know that feeling? Where you salivate a lot and you are doing everything in your power to keep yourself from puking. You swallow excessively, spit continuously and and take deep breaths all in the hope that you can keep your body from vomiting. This defense only works about 60% of the time for me.

After about a minutes....

PROJECTILE!!! It was a single projectile puke blast. All on the inside of my tiny car. On the windshield, on the dash, on the wheel, on the window buttons. On my shorts and shoes. It was only a single heave, but it did so much damage.

I recognized potatoes, peppers, eggs pieces. The liquid portion was mainly protein shake

I pull over, assess the damage. Swear at myself for wasting all the food and pre workout I just consumed. I came so close to just driving home because my interior smelled of death. I decided to go to the gym anyways

I made it through about 5 out of the 10 sets for bench and just left. Even though I cleaned the puke off of my shorts and socks they still reaked, and I could tell people were starting to smell the stank.

Plus, my entire pre workout nutrition had been purged of my system so I felt like a btch when I was lifting.

My car is now airing out in my front yard, I hosed it down but its supposed to be 98 degrees today and 100 tomorrow. fml.

What a sht day.

I would not be happy! that sucks!

Not a knock on you bro, but animal pack is a giant waste of money.

Another thing, a gut full of food during your workout is not always the best way to go.

Heavy squats and a full stomach go together like oil and water lol

I can't work out with a full stomach. Actually had some great morning workouts lately without eating at all.

Entertaining puke story miked8c

First of all not trying to be rude in anyway but that story was great entertainment this morning:)

In reality as you can see in the above posts, not many can train in a packed full stomach. The bigger problem indicators as I see it though is the whole feeling like puking thing every morning. At some point or age in life you will likely become more concerned with health then a big lift (I am a "bit" older and have hit this point).

If you feel like puking every morning you are doing something wrong with your nutrition, sleep, alcohol intake or something. Since every person is different it is very hard to say.

I would STRONGLY suggest getting with someone knowledgeable and detailing your lifestyle. Experiment with changes until you come up with something that works better for you. Something, or multiple somethings, that you are doing is NOT working for you brother!

sry to hear bro... but live and learn, right? i've never scarfed down food like that before a workout.. as i was reading the beginning, i could predict how it was going to end. idk how you've done that for so long without vomiting or at least feeling sick during your workout. I eat oatmeal/eggs, wait an hour, then hit the gym... also have a piece of fruit (apple/banana) a half hour before.

I have the luxery of getting a couple meals in me and taking my time to get to the gym when i feel good and ready.... I couldnt force feed a bunch of food, a protien shake, horse pills, pre work out drink and drive straight to the gym or id barff too..all the blood in your body is going to be trying to digest all that crap instead of filling your muscels.
If i were you id prolly wake up earlier or go the the gym in the evening or somthing.

Just curious Mike, do you have a good reason for eating until you're on the verge of puking prior to hitting the gym?

when i was a runner I had a fruit smoothie before a 5K race. it was not a fun experience, dry heaved twice.. then when i drove home i got dizzy and then went into my backyard and threw up the whole smoothie.

after talking to some experienced runners the consensus was a handful of cereal, thats all. and plenty of water. thats all you need... i learned my lesson the hard way.

as far as weightlifting I do not like to workout on a full stomach, or an empty stomach.. as I said above some light fruit, maybe oats, brown rice, a sweet potato. thats all you need.. then after pig out all you want.

why are you drinking half a gallon of water? do you ever watch atheletes or fighters drink water during a competition or fight? hell no they rinse their mouth and spit!

I was thinking along the same lines. The whole set up made me uncomfortable and I didn't even eat that. The Animal Pak, too much water and the food all at once along with a quart to half gallon of water is just too much.

The point should be to have food in your system not in your stomach bro. Notice everyone on here does not eat like that and run to the gym.

Just advice but I'd eat and wait about an hour or 40 mins and then hit the gym. Leaves enough room for your stim drink to get into your system as well.

Good luck cleaning out your car too. It will stink until you have it professionally washed for sure. My ex wife pikes in my truck one night on our way home from a night out. It wasn't near the amount you spewed inside your car but it reeked something awful.

Mike still gets bonus points for washing off the puke and hitting the gym amid all the, "Good God what died in here!!!" looks he was receiving :D

Someone may have already mensioned this but the way your dieting is where your going wrong. Stuffing your self to the verge of puking every morning is not the way to go. It's a recipe for feeling lethargic, getting fat and health problems. You're trying to force your body to use all this food and it's telling you that it can't make use all of that at once.

Maybe you don't realise during intense exercise your body will vasoconstrictor the blood vessels around your digestive system so that the blood vessels can vasodilate around the muscles your working. This basically means digesting the food in you and taking the energy from it no longer is a priority. So the food you just stuffed into yourself is sitting there throughout your workout, it's not necessarily completely absorbed and utilised to fuel your workout. Especially since oatmeal is one of the slowest digesting sources of carbs out there.

I agree CK.

liquids still have to get digested just like food, so its best to not have a full stomach with even water.

save it for after. just make sure you are hydrated for your activity

Well guys, I wrote this story with the hopes of giving you guys a hopefully funny read.

In my defense I will explain my though process behind my pre workout "diet"

I am new to lifting in the AM, and it is really messing with me, I don't understand how I can possibly lift effectively if I am doing so after an 8 hour fast.

I eat all the food because I feel like that will help replenish the nutrients I lost during sleep.

I drink all the water because I do not want to be dehydrated in the gym(seeing as I am breaking an 8 hour fast), plus the Green Mag and Glycergrow are creatine products.

I drink the protein to, once again, replenish myself of vital nutrients.

I know all these things sounded stupid, but I was honestly just trying to maximize the productivity of my training session. I sure as hell don't do all this for fun, it sucks.

So guys, please school me on how I should eat before an AM workout to maximize its effectiveness. Fromt when I wake up till when I leave for the gym I have about an hour and 15 minutes.

EDIT: Just saw what SL wrote, definitely check that out too.

Hilarious story man. The funniest part for me was the fact that you still decided to workout, with puke all over you and everything. True dedication.

I always worked out later in the day through most of my life, but beginning a while back, I was put into a similar situation to you and even now quite frequently I'm forced to work out about an hour after waking up. So I had the same difficulties on knowing what/how much to eat, if anything.

I think, as some people have said, you need to experiment a bit to see what works. Some options:

1. Some kind of regular meal ex. oatmeal+eggs or eggs+toast, and a coffee--I didnt really like the feeling of so much sitting in my gut, though some people seem to swear by it.
2. Eat nothing, drink some coffee and maybe some water--Some people like this, particularly if you eat a late meal the night before doesn't seem to effect energy levels
3. Similar to number 2, but drink a protein shake--This works well for me personally.
4. Eat a small amount of a easily digestible carb (maybe a small/medium bowl of cereal)--This also works well for me personally.

I think you'll be surprised how little it'll effect your strength/energy levels (if at all, it might even help) if you workout fasted or perhaps with just a protein shake before hand. You won't even be hungry once you do it a time or two (if you're worried about that).

Most importantly, if you're going to eat something, try to eat it as SOON as you get up, and not sit around a bit then eat it. Keep in mind also that liquids digest faster than solids.

As to chugging water, I'd limit yourself to 1-2 pints, and spread it out. Obviously, as you know, you don't want to be heading off the the gym with that "stuffed" sensation, albeit from food or excessive water.

Great response Cato, as usual.

I think I might try the fasted idea. Although instead eating absolutely nothing I will limit consumption to liquids and I will leave 45 minutes after I wake up, not an hour and 15. I will save the big breakfast for after my session.

I will drink water, my protein shake and my pre workout blend.

Will be pumped with this if it work since it goes against everything I believe in haha.

Bro I hate to hear about all this puking and torture your putting yourself through. Like SL said I train fasted every day. Bcaa's and preworkout before bcaas during and oats boiled eggs and whites with protein shake after. I wake at 6 in gym by 630 ready to rock. Your torturing yourself for nothing. Take your multi any time later and make up calories within a specified window and repeat bro. It will work

Really? Are the BCAA's an integral part of this or could I get by without them using the protein shake, preworkout and water?

I wouldn't mind buying them if they are not expensive.

If I do grab BCAAs could you recommend a solid brand? Also should do I need to skip the protein shake for thus?

wow that sucks man sorry I had a similar thing happen once where I puked I was rushing to go somewhere and wanted food before I left. I stuff it down and puked a bit later. For a while it was hard to eat a lot after that

The 10 g of BCAAs ~15 min prior to training is discussed in that article that SL linked to earlier.

Basically at least one study has shown fasted training affects the post-workout anabolic response to weight training more favorably than fed-state training. Fasted training itself, however, is very catabolic. Therefore, in an effort to get the both of both worlds, so to speak, ingesting just 10g of BCAA will produce a stimulatory effect on protein synthesis and metabolism, without causing the body to produce the insulin etc which would switch the body over to a "fed-state."

Martin Berkhan, the guy recommending this strategy, does allow for a whey protein shake in the alternative, though it may not be "as optimal," as just straight BCAAs (quite a bit more glucose will find its way into the bloodstream). If you want to go that route, then you'll probably need to take about 40 grams of protein, since protein contains about 25% BCAAs.

After reading the article I did notice he kept mentioning an increased anabolic response to muscle growth. However, he did not mention anything about fasted training improving strength. I don't know if maybe this guy works till fatigue or something and therefore does not track his numbers but do you guys think that I would suffer strength loss by lifting in the AM fasted?

Martin is a big advocate of strength training. He has a 3x bodyweight DL for instance. That's very impressive considering he keeps his bodyfat in the single digits.

Heres the program he uses...

Reverse Pyramid Revisited | Intermittent fasting diet for fat loss, muscle gain and health

Funny thing is I've worked up to heavy 5s or 3s followed by back off sets instinctually with good results in strength and size. I haven't actually followed his training recommendations to the tee, but it seems legit.

IMO they very important I would not train fasted with out them after researching IFD (Intermittent Fasted dieting). Ck your PM's bro!

I wake up at 7:30 I normally at the gym by 8:30-8:40 but first thing I do when I wake up is get some oats going I just buy the packs of them and have a protein shake with water and then some no explode with water and I'm set normally all done eating by 7.45 I take animal pak as well but I dare not to try that tell I have a real food meal in me I would have blown chunks as well lol. But try less water u should get enough from ur shake and pre workout shake and when u workout drink water as well u should be g2g.

Its not called BREAK FAST it's called meal number 1... have a shake in the middle of the night when you wake up to pee and you'll never go into starvation mode

Good story mike. Just dont ever come to my gym after you do that bro.

Glad I got some laughs, that was all I wanted.

The car reeks, anyone know off the top of their head how much it would cost me to go to jiffy lube or somewhere like it and get them to clean my interior?

I can't even imagine how bad it must smell with the 100 degree heat we've been having up here in the northeast...
