Worst spot I've ever had

Hi,

New to the forum but have been watching it for awhile.

Best gains I've ever had were running Madcow/Rippetoe/Star 5x5 method followed by Westside - that was over a year ago and spent 2007 just being a pussy but am now trying to work on strength again.


Little Rant
Last Wed was max effort squat - box squats - I'm trying to get my standard squat to 500 and figured box squats would be a good way to train for them. Anyway, the gym only has a rack (instead of an cage) with limited safety bar height. I hit singles on 405 and 425 but then was getting nervous when trying to hit 435 so asked a guy for a spot. Usually I have some expierenced freinds in-house but they weren't there so I asked a guy I hadn't seen before because he was the only one available. Turns out this guy is a bodybuilder (by his own admission) so I figured he know what to do because you know... he's a bodybuilder. I told him I should be OK but just keep an eye on things. I unrack the weight and lower to the box without an problem. as I'm beginning my ascent he grabs the bar while on my shoulders which threw my balance off a little and then pulled a little back and up which threw me off ALOT - apparently he had to get some cleans in for the day and figured we could kill 2 birds with one stone if we did it together - he pulled so much that my right foot staggared - and something in my lower back "twinged" - NOT HAPPY and afterwards I didn't say much and tried to move on without talking to him. After that it was pretty downhill as I was feeling the lower back for the rest of the workout.

Between this and the fact that afterwards I saw 4 other people show up to whale on their arms and chest because you know... it's Wenesday, 2 days after the first arms and chest workout on Monday - time to hit arms and chest again. Love seeing the large dudes with big upper bodies and size zero legs beat on their upper bodies all the time.

I had the same thing happen when some jerk decided to "help" me re-rack after a set... I was fine on my own and no where needing a spot (warming up on 185) and this bastard sneaks up behind me and shoves the bar into the rack just as I'm lining up one end at a time... gets one off balance a bit. Fortunately not enough weight to do any damage (like your case) but it does whizz one off.
 
how did you not say something? i would have flipped if some asshole actually caused me to fuck up my back
 
Love a bad spot..I had one guy give me a good shove forward when I stalled with 605 on my back last year. I went crashing down face first into the rack and the bar bounced off my back onto the pins. Needless to say I was not amused & didn't see him in the gym again after that.

Bad spots are the worst thing in the fucking world, I separated a shoulder from one asshole giving the worlds worst handoff in the bench, got thrown into the rack, had someone drop a big DB on my chest, had a guy almost tear my shoulder apart 'spotting' on my wrists...
 
I gotta admit Crocodome I cracked up when reading:

Dave - I was pretty pissed but just wanted to focus on how my back would feel more that get into it with him. I ended up with a familiar knotted/annoying feeling in the lower back between my olblique and lower back - kind on on the side - it's going away.


Tweakle - sounds like you were in a similar spot of being stuck with no spotter (on many ocassions) and having to settle with the worse possible ones available
