working long hours

tuc biscuit

New member
ok, so I got a new job as I am waiting on another job and need one just to tide me over, now they told me it would be long hours, but fuck me I had no idea......it is 6 days a week which is not that unusual, but each day is a minimum of 12 hours, yesterday i did 14, so a quick calculation would reveal the job is anywhere between 72 and roughly 90 hours a week, does anyone do this much? how do you do it?

my last job was 40 hours a week over 4 days (so 3 days off a week) and the job mainly was sitting down in armchairs drinking tea and eating biscuits so I am unprepared for hard work really

When I worked for the law dept. of a brokerage house in NYC and my last job at a law firm, I worked over 60 hours during a five day period. It usually happened when there was a big deal/case going on. It was on a daily basis like your situation, but a few weeks/months of doing that did take a toll on me. There were times at the law firm where I came in at 9 and left at 3am and had to be back to work at 9am. My body got use to it and I drank lots of coffee. If I was a member of EF back then, I would have been popping lots of T-rex. The schedule eventually wore me down.

How long will you be working at this job?

I probably average around 11 or 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. Depending on what events are going on at the moment, I'll be traveling on some weekends or actually at events for a few days here and there. Pretty much my biggest challenge with the job is figuring out how to have ANY semblance of a life with it. I don't even mean going out and drinking, more like finding time to go to the gym or out for dinner.

Let me also add that the only possible way I can deal with the hours and whatnot is the fact that I love what I do. That is pretty much everything right there.

I agree. That's what keeps me going with my Fall/Spring schedule. I love the company I work for and what I do for them. I also love school and advancing my education so I can get a better paying job and start a new career. The 8 hours of work followed by 3 hours of school/studying 4 days a week and 4-8 hr study sessions on the weekends.

W/ regard to enjoying other things in life, I try to take advantage of whatever free minute I have. I will definitely try to not waste any free time this Fall on EF.

KB has it on the nose. I've often done extended periods for 16-18 hours a day and the only things which made it possible were the joy of doing it combined with a huge helping of obsession.

With that kind of schedule your only socialising is with those you work with while you are working.

I once worked 32 hours str8 with some polish dude standing over my shoulder most of the time asking "How much longer? How much longer?"

Yeah, that dream job sitting on your ass must have been nice. I usually work 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. Sometimes, like now, my work days get stretched out to 12 - 16 hour days. Hell, right after 9-11, I worked 60 straight hours, and neve want to do that again. Just suck it up, and hope the next job comes around sooner, rather than later.

32 hours straight? 90? 60? wtf. that's a different world. i've worked maybe 1 or 2 full 8-hour days in the last 1.5 years. i usually get in around 10 am and leave just before 5 pm. and work from home (i.e., fuck around usually) once every couple of weeks. and i usually do fuck-all at work.

of course, i only make 35k and don't like what i do.

Me = Mon thru Thurs 7:30 am to 6:00 pm.

Off every Fri, Sat & Sun.

Actually it was an engineering change for a plastic injection mold.......real fun stuff. :worried:

Man if you don't love your job -- those hours must be torturing.

Your employer is bascially overusing you -- so they don't have to hire another person. You're helping them save money basically.

Hell yeah i would be pissed. Rarely do i see stuff that gets done in 50 hours, that, with some proper planning, proactive thinking and thinking out of the box -- can't be done in 30-40.

Most procedures in corporate america i've found .. are always horribly inefficient. With the person paying for it being the employee who has to work doubly hard to get the same amount done.

Hence the problem of the rat race. If you figure out ways to use your brains to get shit done faster, 40 hours of work in 30 - and you take those 10 hours off to go early -- you get demonized. Especially among other dumber co-workers.

There's very little enticements to get stuff done smartly and efficiently. Hence why it takes 1000 people to do the work of 500 people in most corporate environments. Comapnies that empower their employees, and encourate and reward them well -- usually excel light years ahead of their competition.

These types of "overwork the monkey" tactics ain't it.

Sometimes I work 12 hours. Sometimes I work 32-40 hours. Sometimes I get to take 15 - 45 minute naps in the ambulance.Sometimes I don't gety a chance to pee for hours. It depends on how busy the city is that night. It's about having a job you like. Just hang in there. Take plenty of good food with u so u don't eat like shit. And if u don't like the job, then ditch it. Working a lot of hours at a job u hate will drive a person WACKY.

im surprised this hasnt turned into a "live to work or work to live" debate yet

i think youre mad to work so many hours. personally, i freak out with the standard 8 hours a day, since once you factor in getting ready, driving there, having lunch, and driving back, thats a good 10 hours of my day gone.

working 12 hours a day for a wage? so some other guy gets rich? i dont think so. besides, the people i know who work that much are all dreary, lifeless wraiths as a result. again, stuff that.

im with razorguns on this one

I work in the legal profession. I don't get paid hourly (unless it is overtime or double/triple overtime) and I get paid pretty well for what I do (despite taking a pay cut to work for the legal dept of a Fortune 100 company so I can focus on getting my MBA). It is expected, especially with law firms, that you have to work long hours and/or spend the night to get things done. Deals don't close in 8 hours.

Lawyers and Paralegals don't move up the ladder if they choose to go the part-time, I only work 8 hours a day, or I rather have a family routes. Needless to say, I'm very passionate about what I do.
