Wnat to take my wife and kid to NYC this summer.

I'll second that walking is the way to go. When I was in Manhattan, I used the Michelin Green Guide to the city ( http://www.amazon.ca/NEW-YORK-CITY-...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207802778&sr=8-1 )...definately buy that book...it's got EVERYTHING you need in there. Gives you walking tours of various parts of the city (and the time it takes to do them), street maps, subway maps (you will use the subway a lot...it's great!). Also rates the attractions, so you can just see the very best ones if you're pressed for time. Gives you ideas about places to eat in various parts of the city, ect also. If you want to further research the food, www.roadfood.com is a wealth of information...it's a board for dedicated chowhounds.

nice touristy place to grab some lunch is carnegie deli.

from the airport take a real yellow cab, none of that gypsy shit. you will get ripped off unless you are in the official yellow medallion cab.

for some shopping you can go to the real saks fifth avenue (on fifth avenue). their shoe dept has it's own zipcode.

since you are international you will probs be flying into JFK, i dont even know if laguardia does intl.

for touristy shit i recommened the bronx zoo, and also just walking around times square. central park is pretty nice too during the day, you can do some great people watching. I'm not sure if FAO Schwartz is open anymore, but it is/was an awesome toy store.

if you wanna see some stars i saw a few at Joe Allen restaurant (Nathan Lane, Jerry Stiller, some dude from the partridge family).

best bet would be staying in jersey. fort lee is right at the george washington bridge entrance but its not that nice, all highrises and congestion.

you could stay at the mahwah sheraton crossroads. its further as far as getting into the city but if your here to sight see its an area of jersey/new york border that is much more green and way less congested. it does add time to the commute into the city.

as for city plans. get an itinerary set and stick to it. stay in manhattan the whole time. summer and weekends usually means stuff going on in central park. could check out a yankee game before the old stadium is torn down. times square would be fun to see. statue of liberty. there is alot of shit to do. i hate the city but if you are here for a few days, you should enjoy it. you could check out soho, bleeker street, and all the high end shopping stores. the meat packing district during the day is good shopping too.

What's the best airport to fly into? (JFK?)
Where is a good hotel that is less than a small fortune?
where is a "must eat" place?
"must shop"?
what the best way to get from airport to hotel. limo or taxi?
we just want to go from Thursday night to sunday night and take in all the dorky touristy shit and some shopping....kid is only 6.

etc...etc...etc....

thanks for any help you can offer.

JFK prolly is..i'd take a taxi. i fly into newark myself though

shopping, midtown for sure. madison avenue, etc. You have to also go to Canal street for the novelty of it

eatting? hard to say man..there are retarded amounts of awesome restaurants in new york.

u dont need to stay in jersey .. rent a room in queens ... its much more laid back and cheaper then manhattan .. travel into the city .. where pretty much everything is at

People will deride me for this, but what they:

Fly into Newark.

I know it's an ugly smelly state. But it's cheaper to fly into, you can find a cheaper hotel (driving around NY/NJ border is a pain, so get lotsa maps), and you are still close enough to NY, CT, NJ, etc.

I'll be in NY in 2 weeks. I miss the east coast sometimes.
