I'll second that walking is the way to go. When I was in Manhattan, I used the Michelin Green Guide to the city ( http://www.amazon.ca/NEW-YORK-CITY-...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207802778&sr=8-1 )...definately buy that book...it's got EVERYTHING you need in there. Gives you walking tours of various parts of the city (and the time it takes to do them), street maps, subway maps (you will use the subway a lot...it's great!). Also rates the attractions, so you can just see the very best ones if you're pressed for time. Gives you ideas about places to eat in various parts of the city, ect also. If you want to further research the food, www.roadfood.com is a wealth of information...it's a board for dedicated chowhounds.
