widening lower back

Im at the point that I dont need to train for size anymore, and can focus on the finer points. My upper back is decently wide, however I want to focus on widening the lower parts of my back. What excersises do you guys suggest? thanks

Just curious, why would you want to widen the lower back? I could see the spinal erectors, or your lats. I'm not sure there is a way to "widen it". Perhaps you could enlarge the muscles in your lower back, but I'm pretty sure the shape/size is genetic.

I am trying to create more of a V. I think it is just hard for me to explain the area I want worked. I guess I should say mid to lower lats. I have alwasy had a thick, muscled up back, but width has always been a problem

Get bigger lats. Lats are lats.

Chinups.

Rows.

Maybe deadlifts.

There you go.

Not having this specific problem I wont vouch for the idea 100%, but I've heard it said more than once that when doing rows, you should try to row the weight to meet the area where you are lagging- in your case lower lat- the idea being to enable the specific area you want to grow to directly resist the force of the movement. This can be done for dumbell, barbell, and cable rows.

That will be just defeating the object though. You want to keep you lower back as tight as possible, i.e same as keeping your waist as tight as possible, so your shoulders and lats give off width. If i could recommend one lift though for 'imporving' the lower back and tightening it up, it would be deadlifts for sure. Being the age i am I never used to take notice of how my lower back was coming along, did'nt even know i had a muscle there ;) , but soon noticed when a year or so after kicking ass with deads, i was was getting a few compliments on how my back looked, especially the lower...

Don't be a wimp, DEADLIFT!

to add to what he said... it hasn't been said, but the SHAPE of your lats is genetic just like say your calves.

Yes thats what we're talking about. This is why you need to make the most of your genetic potential.

All of these things will add to the overall package of your back, but honestly, genetics play a hige role in the shape and where your muscular insertions are. If you don't think Lee Preist would have done the exercise to get his lower back out after all the douchbags on the internet critique him for it.......
