Why whey Isolate Rocks! High Biological value (BV)

Once you understand what a Biological value is, for protien, you can see why whey isolate is inferior. :D

Although one gram of protein will contain four calories in all cases, the amount of protein which our body can digest and use for muscel building purposes is not always 100%. In fact, the most easily digestible natural protein source are whole eggs, where the percentag net utilization by our bodies is 94%. Because eggs contain the best protein digestion rate of any natural source, eggs are given a protein rating of '100' and all other protein containing food sources are rated according to how digestible they are compared to egg protein.

AS we all know (and SHOULD be using), there exists protein powders which digest even easier than egg protein and can be utilized by our bodies even more than the 94% that natural egg protein can be. These protein powders would have a protein rating higher than 100 on the scale below.

So here it is... Biological Value

The BIological Value (BV) is a scale of measurement used to determine what percentage of a given nutrient source is utilized by the body. The scale is most frequently applied to protein sources, particularly whey protein. Biological Value is derived from providing a measure intake of protein, then determining the nitrogen uptake versus nitrogen excretion. THe theoretical highest BV of any food source is 100%. To break it down .... - BV refers to how well and howe quickly your body can actually use the protein you consume.

Here is a list of various sources of protein and their respective ratings.

As far as sources of protein created in the lab are concerned, here is a short list of some protein sources you can find in most supplements common today. YOu cann see how they compare to the natural sources listed above:

Whey Protein Concentrate - 104
Casein - 77
Soy - 74

You can see that whey isolate has the highest BV of any protein source. You get the most bang for the bucl. This is usually why it is so damn expensive. I recommend to buy flavourless whey isolate. That way you are not paying for any sugar weight, just pure high grade protein.

I also would recommend taking it with water although many dont for this reason...

Good info, the only problem I have (as with GI values) depeneding on where you go you end-up with different BV values for proteins.

For instance the Egg People say:


Whole egg - 93.7
Milk - 84.5
Fish - 76.0
Beef - 74.3
Soybeans - 72.8
Rice, polished - 64.0
Wheat, whole - 64.0
Corn - 60.0
Beans, dry - 58.0
 
Agreed,Isolate is the cream of the crop.Superior AA profile,and doesn't cause all the stomach discomfort of the concentrates.Don't forget about Micellar Casein as well,has the same benefits as WPI,with the added bonus of being absorbed much slower,thus giving a timed release and less potential of oxidation.

Great stuff Mavy, thanks for posting this bro. Personally I use All the Whey's WPI and Micellar Casein as Huck also suggests. I couldn't agree more that WPI and MC are indeed the best.

Mav don't you mean "superior" instead of "inferior" at the end of your first sentence bro? :)
 
ion exchanged whey isolate is the only thing I use.

What really fucking IRKS me is that all the so-called "advanced" protein powders in the magazines and vitamin store is nothing but whey concentrate. Can someone name a premade whey isolate brand. Labrada is mostly whey concentrate. So are other brands like myoplex.

Hahaha, hey 40, hows it goin? Ya .. I'm a dumbass! I have been writing a proposal for the last 2 hours and my brian is screwed, needed to take a break. I'm sure I am going to start writing about protein in this proposal now. ahhaa

Micellar Casein? I have never heard of this, gonna look into it. I wouldnt mind a slower acting protein throughout the day, and then the fast WPI after workouts. I didnt want to go with a concentrate throughout the day though because the shit plugs me up. WPI goes down like water for me.

thx9000: ya ... you will see that the BVc varry a little between what everyone says. They actually say that WPI has a bv between 100-159 (not always 159), depends on how it is processed.

kbrkbr: I dont really know. I know that in Canada, Canadianwhey.com has the best prices on an isolate that I can find. Allthewhey in the US is supposed to be a very good source of high quality protein at a great price. You will have top shop around.

AAP: Ya I hear you... I tend to stay away from big name brands. You really have to watch the "Mixes" of Concentrate and WPI. Most of these are like 90-10 Con-WPI, so you are really getting ripped. They are not lying, when they say it is a mix, but you are still not getting a 50-50 split.

The GNC guys once told me that you can tell a good WPI, because when mixed it has many airbubbles, but i have never really noticed this to a huge degree. I aslo think that most GNC people dont know crap! hahaha.
