Why train?

After reading the posts on the "form" thread, i've begun wondering why some people lift. Whether it be for looks, strength, to impress chicks, whatever, why do you guys/girls lift? I lift to get stronger and get bigger, but i think my prime reason for working out is to release anger/stress. later.

1) Injury Prevention
2) To do my job better (firefighter)
3) Vanity :D

4) And, since I'm over 30 now, so I don't feel like a stiff 2x4 in the mornings.

slows down the aging process
keeps skin healthy (when im 60 ill look 30) :)
id hate to be fragile
being big rules
people respect you
just like to lift heavy

stay healthy, and as of now get bigger and stronger for sports. but its gotta be to impress girls. they all love a great body. its just an added bonus. like if you meet a smart girl with a good personality AND she has a smokin body, shes a keeper.

Releasing stress, feeling better, being healthy are all very important to me. I really love lifting weights, not really for the rewards but just for its own sake. A lot of people here want to get huge and strong, but I mainly train to stay thin, healthy, have some muscle and strength, I guess for general reasons. When I'm 80 years old I want to be able to get out of chair easily.

i love lifting, i wanna be enourmous one day, vanity, health, and its just plain fun.

Self discipline.. gives me goals ... love doing it almost everyday... dont wanna be fat

because it is better than watching some stupid real TV, eating french fries and drinking cheap beer :D

BTW, working out = serotonin = feeling great

Vanity seems a bad reason, as the more serious you get the less most women are attracted, read "turned off". Innumerable singles ads begin with "no bodybuilders" in my area. . . It is much easier to get a brad pitt/etc body with a fraction of the work as real bb.

And while modest resistance prolongs functional strength in age, most old bbs or pls look like crap. A big body weight (fat or no) has been shown to decrease life expectancy in prospective studies. And if you factor in anabolic, cholesterol probs, hair loss, acne/skin aging, tanning . . . Fact is, to live forever you should eat vegetables only/sprouts and do yoga and long hikes all day in between meditations. Bodybuilding's not about the future -- it's about the here and now

Like most I started for sport (wrestling) and the lifting took over.

But this is a good thread, as I was just wonder what my goals were with all this as I was driving home just now. I originally wanted to compete, but looking in the mirror, I have size and low BF, but I am old, hairy with all sorts of scars and lumps of poorly healed bone from fighting, and I've had to admit the last week or so that BB is not a real option (50 Cent : "I'm not a pretty nigger, but my mom thinks I'm handsome . . . ") I have decided to do pl meets to challenge myself and chart my progress.

I guess I like to feel strong and I like to challenge myself, and that's all I have left! That's all it takes to keep me going!

To get bigger.

which in turn gets you laid more.

My body is the one thing I have near total control over. It is my project, my unmolded clay to make into that which I desire it to become. I am the master architect, and my body is my piece de resistance. It reflect must reflect my highest values; it must reach for perfection.

To being Strong and Athletic- Because one day you may have to stand up and fight for what you beleive in, or protect those who you care about. There are people in this world who put their trust, faith, and life in your hands- how can you sit back and not be able to protect them, you betray their trust.... Because in the long run I don't want to be saying what if I had just a little more strength.......

Hell yeah, man. Hell yeah......

because i want to be fucking huge, dont care about cuts or abs, because i want to be the biggest motherfucker around...really no other reason

Originally ... vanity. I wanted to be less squishy and didn't want to diet or do cardio :) Now I like being strong and I'm a basket case if I don't lift for more than two days.

Damn that's a great answer! That's it right there -- karma for ya!

Also BodybuildingUniverse's leg press sign is hilarious. LMFAO

to fuck hot women and even the petite ones. if i get waay bigger i can actually fucking shake their bone structure while i fuck them like an animal.

that is all

Strength, serotonin, being unique and vanity. Looks carry you very far in life (combined with aptitudes); it creates first impressions & determines how you will be treated.

IMO shaking the bone structure is more about explosive power then size. Remember: EXPLODE!!

Training/Bodybuilding has become more of a lifestyle than a sport

I’m kind of an odd bird here on EF in that I’m just lifting to be healthier. I’m really not interested in “huge”, I just want to be muscular and look good in clothes. I would rather have the body of an Olympic gymnast than Lee Haney. This is the same reason why I will never take roids or bizarre cutting supplements and whatever, I’d rather just eat healthy food and let the chips fall where they may. I guess it’s more of a personal challenge for me, to see how far I can get, but if I don’t get there then my life won’t end or anything.

Who needs to buy drugs when lifting is the best drug you can do?

I disagree with whoever said BB won't make you live longer. That may be true for some people, but not me.

When I stopped lifting and paying strict attention to my diet, I felt no need to prevent myself from indulging... in anything. Why not? Already look like shit.. what's one more beer. Why not get high and eat about 300 cool ranch doritos?

I drank more, A LOT more, ate more fast food, more chips & queso before the fajitas get to the table (whereas used to have none).. more half&half in the coffee (whereas used to drink black).. sure why not have some fries with my burger (used to feel guilty for having even 1 fry!) why? because I didn't have to worry if I'd be able to lift more the next week in the gym, or if my abs were going to disappear. I gained 10 lbs. of fat in a matter of less than a year (with no muscle)

When I'm bodybuilding, getting stronger and bigger, or leaner and attempting to keep strength, everything in my life becomes healthier, because I have goals to work towards with my body.

Sure it's about vanity, but I'm sure if I didn't bodybuild, my life would be MUCH shorter. It keeps me strong enough to avoid overindulging. A lot of us are obsessive compulsive, or we couldn't be as good at this as we are. This keeps me obsessive compulsive in a positive direction. I admit my weaknesses.

Maybe yoga and meditation will make me live longest, but BB makes me live BEST :)

Hard work and dedication is the key of success in BBing

Lifting will make you live longer ?
Depends on what you "eat" (food and supplement and juice) and your heart (intense training may be harmful)

I was just saying it will make me live longer because when I'm not lifting, I tend to drink alcohol, eat unhealthier, not pay attention to sleep. I was just talking about why I lift, like the thread said.

Never done juice yet, I agree that could present longevity problems.

I train because I like to feel strong. I like to be able to jump higher and sprint faster and throw further and punch harder. And thats why I train for strength and explosive , don't really care about muscle shape or stuff, but I'm glad that the side effects of being stronger is that you will usually look good, not too big just powerful.

Haven't seen proof yet that a death was directly related to steroid use.

However, abuse of ANY drug(s) can be harmful to your health.

lol!

I lift to be strong AND to look strong. But if I could just have one or the other, it would be the actual strength. I just LOVE not being helpless.

self discipline, fun, vanity

also two great quotes by you guys some it up well

The intimidation factor certainly is an awesome one, I dont remember the last time I was fucked with. After 6 years lifting is just routine, its balance, its what I do during the day.

Summed up:

Look strong
Feel strong
Hot chicks
Stress relief/anger management

Be strong, and a capable man. A lot of my friends are out of shape and I see how it effects them both physically and mentally. I also do it for the health reasons, to keep my body functioning and not letting the old rough and tumble world take its toll on me. Oh and i love to eat, this way i can eat more and not gain as much fat:):)

Lots of reasons...

Football.....need to fuck people up
Powerful frame....all i want is to have damn stinking presence when i walk into the room.
Strength- SO i could back up the previous.
Health...i am sure this experience here will help when i turn 40 and decide to trim down...

1. Training has greatly reduced my headaches and relieved a lot of neck/shoulder blade tension I used to have.
2. I sleep so much better now.
3. I feel better about myself and am healthier.
4. I like to look good.

Now that's what i'm talking about. That is the attitude i like to hear. I remember reading nasser say how the weights make him angry when he looks at them, as if they're consciously trying to crush you. The thing i love about lifting is that you can never win in my opinion, you can always get bigger, and there can always be more weight on the bar, yet we struggle, perhaps absurdly, against the inevitable loss; we find victory in the journey. god isn't training awesome?

Hell yeah.

I train for strength, appearance, and health.

There's nothing more motivating than seeing all the fat-asses slouching around the office on a Monday morning, looking 10 years older than they are because they gave up and just don't care. I will NEVER give in like that!!
