after many customer support calls i still dont know

it dials, makes the 'shaking hands' noises but almost never gets past that stage, constantly making the high pitched noise.

i suspected the modem driver decided to call the support team who had me change dialing preferences and dial up strings which did jack shit

couldnt find a driver disk so downloaded a newer one from drivers.com and updated it thru control panel, it accepted it but still wont connect. worse still the new driver completely removes the modem speaker sounds so i cant even hear whatits doing

help me! super moderator karma for genuine help!

lesson learned: dial up is teh sux.

Are you using XP?

If so goto properties on the connection you are trying to make, then on the general tab, below your moden, select "Configure..."

Make sure "Enable modem speaker" is checked.

Disable (uncheck) all the hardware features and try the call.

If that doesn't work (probably wont) go back to the same properties page and drop the "Maximum speed" down in increments and retry calls until you find a speed at which you do connect (ie: set for 57600 and make a test call, set for 38400 and make a test call, etc...). You may also try disabling PPP Settings on the Networking tab as well.

Also, make sure that the phone plug isnt loose in the back.

im on another computer, its win98

any other ideas, i'll only be able to try this stuff on the weekend so i need a whole bunch of stuff incase this dont work

Static on the line
Bad line

Try lowering the speed from 56K to like 48 or 24 tempor and see if it will connect and if so you have a bad phone line...
