Why is the rest of the worlds opinion of the US negative?

The reason the US is getting a bit on the bad side is the "we are above the law and you are all our bitches" attitude.
Add to that breaking already signed treaties , invading other countries , installing dictators , violating other countries sovereignity, financing terrorists and belittling the rest of the world and you have the answer.
Why the French don´t like the US is quite obvious.

In relative terms the Roman or British empires were more powerful. This type of arrogance and self-flattery is another reason why Americans are disliked.

I actually meant in terms of benevolance... we are not as much conquerers and opressors as the Romans or Brits...but our client state policy and of course this Iraq thing put a nasty bloodstain stain on our record

I've never heard of this stereotype before!

Actually I think Europeans perceive US society as the opposite - an overworked, overly competitive rat race. I think it is Americans who perceive Europeans as being a bit lazy.

Well as a European i can certainly agree to that. It's one of the things that makes it hard to live here and i can definitely see why there are so many poeple on anti-depressants. There is more to life then chasing the dollar, but living here i have no choice.

America isn't really that well liked here in Canada...believe it or not. I, myself, don't enjoy the entire american mentality. Too cocky for my taste. I have tons of american friends and they are all awesome people, it's just country as a nation that i don't really like. Too aggressive and too much of a propaganda machine.

Although i DO think bush is doing the right thing by kicking the shit out of Saddam:)

I'd say the opinion of US policies is negative, but generally most of the world doesn't have a problem with american citizens.

Generally, you are right. American people have helped me a lot in the past. But there were also very many that were the most racist, hatefull, spit on me people i have ever met in life. While i work on being objective in my dealings with Americans i can't honestly say that the racism i experienced has not changed me, and i am white as they come, but a foreigner none the less.

you're right. but that kind of attitude exists in most every culture to some degree.

however one gripe people have in some other countries is what can be described as arrogance displayed by americans when they travel abroad. most americans when they are in foreign countries EXPECT the native people to speak englsh. That's pretty rude. At least try and respect the country you're in and speak the language.

This is an interesting question - Rome has left its mark of Christianity on teh world, which is still inlfuencingteh world today. Look at our Attorney General; it will be interesting to see if we leave that kind of legacy on the world when it is all said and done.

The US, if focused on the goal, could conquer the entire world. No empire has ever approached that. From a military standpoint, we could have a space based means of delivery of missiles in place within a matter of two years. After that, we could seize control of almost all the oil and other resurces in the world very quickly. We could impose economic rule on Earth, supported by nuclear missiles and laser cannons in space. (Already tested the laser and blew up missiles. If the US turned even more money to the development of more advanced rocketry and other technologies that benefit the war machine, we could really do terrible things)

Could Rome have done that? With the technology, maybe. But American technology has progressed more from 1800-2003 then the whole world did from 50 AD (Roman times) to 1800. So who knows?

Anyway, the reasons for animosty toward the US are legion. Excellent point about how non-dictatorships are anti-American as well. This post could go on forever.
