Being unique, creative and original will be remembered and much more sentimental than generic. I think the point is, however you choose to express yourself or your feelings about someone, it's a good thing. You don't do it out of hopes for reciprocity or because it is expected, you do it because you want to share that inner special part of yourself with someone else.
