yes. that IS why.
but... there are people who write them so that they (or someone they work for) can profit from people buying a tool to get rid of it.
mostly, its just geeks who enjoy breaking into the system cause they can.

Virii are written because they can and often it's part of a computer science class project. Phishing & pharming are done for greed; often from former eastern bloc countries like Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia.

Well most of the people in the United States who make viruses are teens who sit in their basement and are mad at the world. But in other countries in Eastern Europe, they make some hardcore viruses. Viruses are boring now, they used to actually do some cool shit. Most of them are made now to get a buck or two here and there.

I compare it to vandalism. Busting someones computer, busting out a car window. One requires a brick and walking around outside, the other requires sitting on your ass in front of a computer. Don't you guys remember Coolio? The 16 year old dorky white kid that got busted for writing some virus that screwed the world for a day. I don't think he was strong enough to throw a brick or swing a bat so he was forced to use a computer.
