Why Commercial Gyms SUCK ASS!!! (My must read article)

We have the same type thing here in Detroit called Lifetime Fitness. They auctully have decent equipment but its chuck full of people that dont give a rats ass about lifting. I know all about the up front payments and 50$ a month. I didnt last long there. Powerhouse is my home now.

I went home recently and wanted to train at my old gold's gym. It used to be great....full of serious lifters even though its a franchise and tons of weight. Anyway my dad (hes 57) lifts there now and it is no longer a gold's. I told him I was going to try to get a 2 week membership but listen to this crap...............there is no deadlifting or grunting of any kind allowed. I have never heard of anything like this and couldn't understand how they could regulate what lifts you could do. Absolutely blew my mind.

I went the 24hour in my area that place sucked. I'm not a hardcore lifter or anything like that. It seemed like I was at the bar, people just went there to try to hook up.

i have a friend that works as a membership consultant at a commercial gym. NEGOTIATE. these guys work off commission. they'll do anything to get you to sign up, even if it means waiving the enrollment fee. best time to visit is at the end of the month when they need to hit their quota. if you're good enough, you'll be able to walk away with a low monthly, no enrollment fee, and other goodies like free guest passes, etc.

Yeh, F*ck that ! I HAVE to deadlift ! I kinda MAYBE understanding the grunting cuz theres this guy that used to come to my gym and he would take it over the top. He would give out this loud grunt/scream every rep!!! Thank god he never lasted long cuz I was about to say something to him. But back on topic- I pay $20 a month and there is never a lot of people there... its great ! I dont have to wait or anything..just take my time!!

I hate to be bugged by trainers. Being a novice lifter, I can understand why they come and talk to me. They're trying to teach me the "correct stuff." But if I were a trainer and I saw somebody looking and moving weights like Illuminati, I'd have the reasoning to not to try to "teach him" any thing. This guy is doing this for a long time and lifting weights those trainers will never see on the bar themselves. Plus after all these years of lifting, his back seems to be functioning alright. So, they have the nerve to patronize a better lifter because of a 4 week training certificate? Dumb...

I hate to go against the grain, but the 24 hr in Irvine CA is nice. Good setup with a small area for pl's.
BUT, just as expensive, it's one of the bigger 24 hr gyms.

I'm glad to be back home, I just paid a little over 350 for the year

My wife is a trainer at one of these gyms. People stay out of my way. We have some guys that think they are powerlifters but apparently they just bought the giant Tshirts and lifting shoes and left the heavy training at home... I love lifting more than them. It's about 5 of them and they monopolize the squat rack for hours doing 1/2 squats.

But... they are actually nice guys. Just misguided....

I work out at a golds heere in Bothell, WA. It has a nice freeweight area except for the fact that 90% of the members dont know what hte hell they are doing. So you get jackasses with huge arms and scronny ass legs doing curls in the squat rack with more back movement then arm movement. But as long as I dont talk to anyone im good. :D
