WHY CARDIO makes you FAT!

Also, if you want to use primitive man as an example, they had to walk, and use bursts of energy

Yes, And if I remember correctly, primitive man died in their 40's

As would modern man without the present medical advances.

Using the pratice of primitive man as an example is not to show what is better, but to show how our bodies were designed to be used through evolution and how to make the most of our genetic abilities.

interesting, though.. I'm not sure if we were designed say... for any specific type of exposure, due the the incredible ways in which our bodies are able to adapt to their environment, IMO we are a highly adaptable life form, but certainly some things will be harder on us with an immediate impact.

I'd have to diasagree.

Look at those japanese fisherman aisolated from the big cities b/c they live in rocky coves.

They are healthy as can be and live to be 100-110 years old.

IMO, everybody is born with a "genetic time of death". Envirnomental factors and other factors simply shorten this time.

Now, with advances in genetics, I think its possible to increase this "genetic time of death" further.

I agree, but it's a seperate issue from what I'm talking about.

I also think, a non polutted, stress free life can allow us to live far longer than the standard 75 years or so.

On a similar topic, I was reading about how the giant tortise lives to be up to 120 years of age (and they sure ain't doing any aerobics). But what was interesting is, it's usually disease that gets them. They don't really die from "old age".

I guess i am tenacious! :) I was basically responding to your comment and here i quote,"anyway, here is some of the info I was reading about how cardio is more susceptable to fat gain. ..." Clearly the article you posted does not support or even allude to this. The entire balance of this thread has been exclusively either weight training and the hell with cardio or cardio and weight training. I have read not a single post about substituting cardio for weight training. As i have previously mentioned, it is well documented that weight training is an effective calorie burner(i'm not sure why you need to bring this up in your discussion with me since i have never indicated it was not), i have addressed myself soley to the issue of cardio making you susceptible to fat gain and actually making you gain fat, clearly an erroneous assumption since there is not a shred of evidence to support this. i would suggest that a graceful way to end this discussion is to either find some research that shows cardio causes fat gain or carefully read my posts and all the others that simply state that for "us" weight traing AND cardio are the optimal balance of exercise for muscle gaining, weight control, and fitness.

Unfortunately i have a hard time backing away when folks post articles and studies that say one thing and draw conclusions that say another.

If you want to do additional high rep low weight cardio instead of walking or jogging such as nelson suggests, be my guest, i see nothing wrong or contradictatory about that. I may even try it although my favorite cardio right now is walking, it is both a fat loss, fitness enhancing activity as well as a social event that my wife and i share.

jboldman...you never give up do you? I thought we could've eliquently ended this arguement at page 5...I guess not.

If you re-read the ORIGNAL article posted on this page, you will find that the author offers lifting as a better alternative to cardio. He uses that point THROUGHOUT his article. ...For the next few pages after the article, people argued about cardio vs. weightlifting, cardio vs. diet, and colorful opinions of the author...

As far as the article I posted from AJCN, other (much older and widely known) research shows people with more muscle DO burn fat faster than the average person....I can post some articles about the research if you want to read them, but I thought that point was blatently obvious to everyone who knew anything about biology. A resonable conslusion from that is that lifting will be more effective at burning fat than cardio will.

I hope this has made things more clear.
