Why Can't A White Man Walk in Harlem without Getting Beat Up or Killed?

I was born and raised in Harlem and even had a white friend that
lived in my building. This was 15 years ago. I visit friends in
Harlem now and their are whites and asians walking all over
day or NIGHT. If you walk in Harlem looking like you don't belong
(day/especially night) you will get messed with. And trust me
there were a lot of brothers from out of town that got jump just
as fast as a white guy. This would happen on the west side
(blacks) or the east side (puerto ricans). There is just too much
sterotyping going on from gossip and he said she said.

I have lived in both a very well to do area and a ghetto in my lifetime. During most of my highschool years I went to a predominately white high school. I had zero problems during my time in this school. Through forces beyond my control I was forced to move to the "ghetto". Now I was in a predominately black school. All of a sudden I was threatened for wearing a red shirt and witnessed a drive by shooting. Going through a metal detector to get into your high school doesn't leave the best memories. There were parts of the town where I was afraid to DRIVE down, much less walk. Everyone gave you dirty looks. There's no way in hell anyone can label me a racist who knows me. I don't believe because you are poor that you have the right to act like an animal and prey on others.

I will ask one question to all of you though that I've asked before. If you were walking down a dark street late at night and had a large sum of cash on you, and on one side of the street there was a group of white guys, and other other side a group of black guys, which side would you walk down? Answer honestly...

I'm not calling you a racist--I've read your other posts and know you're a smart thoughtful guy. But I would say this: picture yourself as a black man stuck at night in southie (the poor Irish area in Boston) walking down the street. You'd be in just as much danger. It's not the race, it's the poverty and ignorance. Poor white uneducated kids can be just as scary as the kids you saw. Any race can. It just so happens that in most inner cities the poor people are black. I've been threatened by both whites and blacks (I'm Asian). Truthfully, it's scarier getting threatened by the whites, because it's in the back of your head: if the cops come, will they take my side or the white kids' side? Not much of a question if you're being threatened by black kids.

I agree with you. But as you said, most of the time the poor in the inner city are black. I don't believe anyone was born to be a criminal. But with the "gangster" image being popular these days and some of my own personal experiences, if I were in a predominatley black area late at night I would be a bit scared. I've seen people get shot in front of my school, and have also been threatened on numerous occasions by young black males. I've known many outstanding black people in my life. So me being a racist isn't the issue. I've actually met alot more white assholes in my life than blacks. But entering a poor neighborhood(black or white)late at night doesn't set me at ease. The sad thing is it's usually a black neighborhood though I wish things could change...

Because you haven't heard about it doesn't mean it didn't happen. The shit happends all the time. And about it making the front page is bullshit. If its WHITE on Black then its national news.

Take for instance the black lady that carved KKK into her chest and blamed it on some whites. Well she got plenty of compassion from the entire country until she admitted that she made it up.

Yes it was a tragedy, but what about all the whites that get beat to death by blacks?? its almost as if nobody cares. It sucks that they died in vain.

EXACTLY, a black man kills a white guy, no biggie, dont even make the paper, a white man kills a black man, and automaticly it makes headline news as a racist killing.
anyways, back in the 60's, all blacks wanted was equal treatment, now thats not even good enough, they have to have a all black tv channel, there own awards ceromony for black movies, and songs and shit. and black colleges, really it seems to me like they are fuckin themselves, soon theyll demand there own water fountains again, batherooms, and shit like that, and alll that MLK accomplished for them will have been for nothing.

Came across this thread and found interesting. I grew up in Pitsburgh and the racial lines were drawn for everyone to see.....u would never hang in the hood.

Now I live in DC and it is entirely different....first its 80% black and there are a ton of wealthy black professionals. I have went to cabarets where I was the only white guyout of 500 and had 0 problems...0! I get more static partying with my boys! I find the black dudes down here cool...they don't give a fuck....if u are at a party they will let u be.....Now in Pittsburgh....u will get static!

To make race relations even worse, a force of blacks is beating the band for reparations for their enslavement. What a bunch of shit. I'm second generation American, my family is from Eastern Europe, why should my tax dollars be wasted on providing money to people who can't even prove they were descendants of original slaves. I guess the Gov't needs to find out who exactly imported the slaves, who actually owned them and who condoned that activity. I'm sure this won't be acceptable to the knuckleheads leading the push.

When my family came here to the US we all worked our asses off and made a business out of nothing. Furthermore, I am proud to say I've never accepted any government handouts either. My father has been robbed in our business several times, all of these robberies have been committed by blacks and our business is no where near the VFW (very few whites) section of the city. It is really unfortunate, but I certainly become more vigilant when a black enters our store and I doubt I will change anytime soon.
