In my 38 years of living, I have deduced this about women. They like to fuck with men just to see if they can get your attention solely for their egos.

I was thinking along the same lines. As soon as you "bite" and she knows that she could have you if she wanted you, she'll pull back and act like it was all just harmless fun and she never, ever meant anything beyond that. She'll play the friends card and you'll wind up feeling like a fool and kicking yourself, thinking, "God, how could I ever have thought that she was interested in me? Of course she wasn't seriously flirting. Duh." But in reality, it wasn't that you took the vibe the wrong way, it's that she pulled a bait-and-switch on you.

I could be wrong, but I'd put my money on that scenario before any other.

Same here. I've kept telling myself, "She's doesn't mean anything by it. She doesn't mean anything by it. She doesn't mean anything by it.", until finally the flirting and signals become so goddamn flagrant that I'm like, "OK, she must be wanting something more. There's no way I could misinterpret this." Then, I make a move and "BAM!" Smackdown. Even if it's in a nice way, it's still a smackdown. It's like someone smiling and holding out a box full of your favorite pizza so you can take a slice, and then slapping your hand down when you reach for it and yelling, "What the hell were you thinking, trying to take my pizza like that!?".

The only difference is the kind of pie involved.
