seriously, listen to a lot of playing by guys like clapton, knopfler, stevie ray (3 different styles). Try to practice to their leads, you will see how sustaining notes is so important.

Even if you like metal, you will be much better (oh yeah even Page at some times is great to practice too)

i have been playing for about 1 yr 7-8 months. ive never done the metronome measure so i cant really tell you. yes i do want to shred and is somewhat decent at it. i can sweep, 3, 4,5 strings but some arpeggios incorporating all 6 are pretty fucking hard for me. especially minor or diminished arps. i basically try to learn a new song a week in progressively harder difficulty , and one scale and its respective 7 modes , its harmonic minor and minor pentatonic. the exercises are the usual chromatics, string skipping and basically run down of scales. playing scales alone is the best exercise for me. i guess to give u an idea of my level would be pretty much any song off trivium's ascendancy album from start to finish.

i havent had strings on my electric in 2 months though so i gotta go out and buy new strings. right now im broke so ...

if u want to shred i recommend u learn aeolian mode (aka minor scale), harmonic minor, phyrigian , dorian. i also recommend u learn ur arpeggios.. minors, diminished, major etc etc.

i can already play all that, Vaughan, clapton, hendrix etc.

even metallica i can play, kirk hammett isnt a shredder hes a soloist...

im talkin about dragonforce, children of bodom, van halen avenged sevenfold, and even some randy rhodes shit...

Since you are all together here, how good are the likes of Kirk Hammet ant the plethora of Metal guitarrist we have these days? Anyone that really stands over the crowd? I like how certain bands sound, but if you listen carefully you see that the guitar is basically filling the blanks and certainly does not seems (to the untrained ear) too complicated, probably because the composition as a whole is good.
