u guys are all clueless. no offense just a history and classics major. the ancient spartan hoplites would destroy any army u throw at them. 500 spartans took on a million persians at the battle of thermopoly, and at the battle of salamis they sacked persia with about 200 spartans against 100,000 persians. in gladiator when the soldiers use their shields and all make a big protective barrier, that is hoplite formation. the spartans were the masters of it. the spartan mother would tell her son, die on the battlefield, but do not come home a coward. badassses to the end. and there only rival was the cartaginians led by hannibal.

therein lies the problem. In ancient times they said that 1 on 1 a spartan would get his ass beat down by most anyone. But if you put 10 spartans against 100, they would come out on top.

SO is the question in a one on one battle, or group tactics as a society/organization?
 
well if i was asking for an organized army i would have thrown in the spartans/romans, but i was asking for disorganized, primitive badasses.

maybe they were tough for their ages but a mechanized battalion of marines would crush the entire spartan army

I discount stories that are more than a couple hundred years old. Mythology takes over in my opinion.
 
ok guns if different we didn't list them. one on one bad ass. alexander the great's army. he fought armies 5-10 times bigger than his. but he would bring in mongolian experts to teach him martial arts. it was the origin of martial arts outside of asia. romans as well. they studied the fighting arts greatly. cornfish who told u that spartans would get beat one on one. its not true. i have studied the spartans for years at the best classics program. they were incredibly skilled in close combat as well as spear throwing. and primitive, well ancient greeks came before all of them, mongols and huns were way after A.D. oh and the israeli army nowadays would eat the germans alive. america is the only country that could handle them. they actually are the most bad ass. just read about the mosad. the israeli secret service. un rivaled badasses.
 
I think you mean the "Mossad" not mosad, regardless different times, different enemies, different weapons, different objectives, its idiocy to say one group was the best and actually try and justify it over another in any serious manner. You'd have to make a vast array of assumptions.

LoL you're a history major huh? First of all there was more like 100,000 Persians at Thermopylae and the 300 Spartans at that battle also had several thousand allies from the other Greek city-states helping them defend the pass.

The Battle of Salamis was a naval battle and the Greeks were outnumbered 2 or 3 ships to 1 by most estimates.. not sure where you got 200 vs 100,000. I do agree the Spartans were badass, and the Greeks put up amazing fights against impossible odds, but calling everyone clueless and pulling facts out of your ass makes you look ignorant.

Mongolian experts trained Alexander's army? Thats a neat trick seeing as how the Mongols didn't emerge until about 1000 years after Alexander's death.

I was thinking in more of a total fight to the death kind of deal. Of course China would never send a billion people to war, but they could.

well there is no gauanteed historical account of salamis guy, and the battle was fought on land and water. have you read herodotus. there is conflicting opinions on it. thermopoly was definitely over 100,000 persians and near a million. and by the way every other greeks bailed out on the spartans so they were left alone. this was one of the major causes of the peloponesian war between sparta and athens and both sides allies. and my major was classics greek and roman history, i was taught by the most renown professor in the nation in this field. i wasn't saying your clueless to be a dick, i was just surprised not to see romans or greeks atop the page.

are you implying martial arts orginated in asia? actually the greeks made a competition called pankration, and in its modern form its called pancrase. it emphasised strikes, ground work and throws. if youre saying martial arts didnt come from asia, but rather this was the first instance of asian MA being used outside of asia, than my bad.
 
yes i am saying that the greeks learned fighting and killing methods from asians, namely mongolians that were just tribes at that time, and possibly turkish like people, greeks were the first people to study the art of fighting, yes
