Who here trains alone?

Bobber

Well-known member
I am training alone this semester and it seems a lot harder to find motivation to get in there and when I do it is deffinetly not balls to the wall. Any tips?

its all mental man, seriously. i love training alone because only i know exactly what my goals are. just keep thinking of the benefits you get and what u wanna get outta of lifting. all the motivation i need is looking at myself in the mirror and ill bust my ass for 2 hours or more. you just gotta have the right state of mind.

Raises hand...

Haven't had a partner for more than 4 months -- Only one, a former Mr.Illinois was good... I couldn't keep training with him because my job changed hours. :(

yeah i like to train by myself in the privacy of my own home.

I am fully capable of motivating myself and i dont get distracted by talking to other people and everyone around me. This way i have all of my equipment to myself, nice and quiet, and i can train barefooted and without a shirt :)

Have yall ever read Arnold's Encyclopdia? In it he talks about how important having a good work out partner is and I seriously feel the same way. Maybe I should try an mp3 player.

You need to learn to train alone first and foremost. If you do come across a lifting partner it will be a nice addition but you need to get past the point where you need one for motivation.

I personally disagree with this. Not only can a good training partner help motivate you, but they can also watch your form and help you with problems you may not even realize you have.

I think the point he was trying to make.... is that while a training partner can have great benefits, you should learn to train by yourself so that you can still train effectively with intensity, should the situation arise where you're in the gym on your own. You should never have to RELY on a partner.

I have always trained alone. Not by choice, I just have no friends.

I ask someone for help if I need a spot.

Training alone is the shiznit. Just me, my thoughts, and my MP3 player bumping phat trance. It's my escape from the world.

I lift alone. I am intense and I am good at creating excellent energy. In fact, sometimes the gym is the only time during the day that i can really get pumped up.

No one at my gym lifts with the intensity that I do... and hardley anyone in my gym does a complete body workout through out the week. Hardley anyone in my gym does squats. NO ONE does deads or stiffies. I have even had trainers come up to me to tell me that the stuff i do is rare in the gym.

HOWEVER, i would PREFER to have a lifting partner. It helps boost my energy even more and i feel that I lift a little better when i have someone watching and yelling at me. I am not ego tistical, but i think i get more pumped when its time to show off the strength.

I lift alone. And enjoy it. However, if I could find a partner who lifted like I did, with the same goals as me, I think it would be very beneficial.

ive always trained alone. it would be cool to have someone to train with that was just as motivated as me

I train ar home, first off, so a partner was never really available. That's not to say that I'm not perfectly content with my training alone. It is nice to have a partner to talk to when you're waiting those long 3-4 minutes between intense sets. I've had a friend come over who just wanted to chill so I figured I'd get my workout done while he was there. It ended up going quicker than any workout I've had before.

Okay anyway, I don't need a training partner. Nor does anyone else for that matter, but like someone before me said, it's a mental thing. I get my motivation from:

1) Envisioning my future self - bigger, faster, stronger... GRR!
2) The insanely loud music blasting in the background, be it techno or death metal
3) Pooling all the shit people gave me to use as a source of anger and rage to get those weights up
4) Thought of being stronger and being able to protect my friends if the need arises
5) A big picture of a protein shake hanging on my wall, reminding me of what proceeds the intense workout! ;)

Just recently had to stop training with my partner because she wasn't committed to it the way I was. I was _her_ motivational force, and I think she misses not having me around anymore.

Now I workout at night when it is most convenient for me. Sometimes another buddy of mine works out at the same time; sometimes not. We're not always working on the same thing and often find ourselves on opposite sides of the weight room. If he does make it when I do, it's nice to see a friendly face. If not, I'm okay with that. Sometimes it's good to be alone.

The right person can really motivate you. Like Legion says, they're nice for those long rests between sets, too. Besides, they're handy to have around when you're doing 1RMs. :)

I also train alone. However I kinda get the best of both worlds. I don't have to adjust to anyone's schedule, and my workouts go a lot faster than with a partner. But the good part is, I can always find a bud who knows what he's doing to spot me when I need it. I've been at my gym for a couple years now so I've gotten to know the other regulars. And they're all good guys, always ready to help, as I am.

I have a good lifting buddy that is basically the same height/weight as I am. He's very close to my lifting numbers, and is just as driven as I am with the same goals. Its cool.

But, for if you need to use some of my old hardcore training partners, try these guys.....

Slipknot
Disturbed
Slayer
Soulfly
Sepultura
Pantera
SOD
Napalm Death

I thought I was the only one that worked out more intensely than anyone else in my gym - I find not one girl (all the girls in my gym are there to loose weight - not build muscle) and none of the guys do anything of great importance. I don't see anyone do deadlifts - squats and I just started seeing a few guys using the t-bar (and that was only after they say me doing it and had to ask me how to do it!). I only wish I could find a workout partner that was as intense as me - but on the other hand I do get in and out of the gym faster.

Hey Thai, you should checkout these groups... they scream alot so you can't hear they're lyrics, but their music is usually loud and insane:

Converge - Fault & Fracture (Insane song, gets me crazy!)
Atreyu - Ain't Love Grand, Lip Gloss & Black, A Vampire's Laments, Dialated, A Song For The Optimists, Living Each Day Like You're Already Dead, At Least I Know I'm A Sinner
Hopesfall - Dana Walker
Poison The Well - Torn
Rob Zombie - Superbeast
Dillinger Escape Plan - 43% Burnt
A good rave/techno song I downloaded off KaZaA awhile back was called "Raver's Movement" by Bertocucci Fernanzano. If you're into techno at all, download it. It's pretty damn hardcore, fast-paced, and just really good... gets me insane.

In my close to 5 years of training I have gone through multiple partners but only 2 have been great. Anytime we were in that gym together the energy we both gave off was insane thus pushing us way beyond our limits. In my eyes a true work out partner isn't just the guy you go to the gym with, he is more like your best friend. You eat together, go out together, and have the same goals as each other, kind of like your wing man. Maybe I should put an ad in the paper "Training partner needed apply with in."

Alone works for me. I put on my music and hit it at my pace which is generally twice as fast as the next guy. I have had people ask to work out with me and it's fine as long as they keep up. Most of the time they don't or can't. I even had a guy blow chunks once in the trash can after legs. For me its not recreation, I have a lot of shit to do and I don't want to be there all night, so I have to make the best use of my time.

I train alone right now b/c nobody else trains WSB at my gym at the time I have to get there. I do have a great group of guys that help me out a fucking ton though(spotting, hold boards, etc.) I used to train with the guy who took 3rd at the Team Universe in the Heavies, but he isn't down with a powerlifting style workout though.

I train alone sometimes, but most of the time with my brother, whose 15. He uses much lighter weight, but we do the same muscle groups on the same days, so it helps us focus on form, reps and sets, especially me, cuz i want to give a good example being the big brother.
I've had 2 excellent lifting partners, both who were stronger than me, which was great cuz it pushed me to use more weight and not slack, and were more experienced with different excercises.
Sadly the current one got sent of to war and the other goes to school hours away, but we still lift together some weekends.
Working out with the right person beats solo any day.

i usually train with a partner or two cuz my friends around here always call me up to go work out wid them. i am their unpaid personal trainer it seems  . but generally i would say i prefer to train alone cuz nobody at my gym lifts wid the same intensity i have :fro:

I try to find people to train with me, but they are affraid.

Its not like I am going to scream in their face.

I would make them work hard. I like a partner who is a motivator, a punisher, and someone who is willing to work hard regardless of their strength.

I think several people on this board would make a good training partner.

If you stop tranning that would be the worst thing you could do. Just think of all the time you put into it before and now it would all go to waste. i do think it is something you just need to get over. I know it is... Just think of all your old reasons why you got yourself into the gym. Everyone in this world started out somewhere and they all had awsome reasons to do it. so all you need to do is think about though's reasons and keep them in your head at all times....

Huge
Cut
don't fuck with me
Going nuts
Bitches
when you take off you shirt bitches just cream.

Come on i know almost everyone who dosen't workout to be body builder has somewhat close to these same reasons. just think about that. ......
I'm on my own to and i won't give up....
Are you giveing up....

I've worked out with many different people, and I've also worked out alone at different periods in time for the last 20 years or so.

It honestly doesn't make any difference to me.

My motivation comes from within.

When I first got into lifting some 12 years ago, I trained with a couple of partners who had been training for years. They helped show me the exercises and got me started on the path to musclehood... Of course being neither of them were trainers, they also taught me a few bad habbits along with the good. But over the years I have learned to adjust things to get the form correct and stay focused on the muscle.

I moved away from my old stomping grounds to go to school and what not, and could never find anyone that trained like I did. So at times I stopped training... I regret that let me say... Hell if I had stayed focus solidly for the past 12 years, I would be looking pretty damn fine now... But it wasn't until I learned to train solo, that I really learned to train consistently.

So in my opinion a partner can help get you going, but once there you got to be able to do it alone if you want to survive.

I train alone as well, have to make some changes in regards to exercise choice but I like the flexability of being able to show up at gym when I want to which is crucial due to my hectic schedule.
