I actually suspect Nubly is playing devil's advocate but I don't think much of the way he's going about it.
Now that you mention it, the last cop I spoke to said something like "Don't try to do our job." His point being that a litterbug, jaywalker, red-light-runner might be a dangerous psycho, after all. But damn it, it is not just the cop's job. It's everybody's job, if we're to be a society and not just a mob. If a litterbug can only be cowed by someone with a badge and a gun -- if you feel justified punching someone out because he points at your empty paper cup on the ground and says "Hey, you dropped something" -- then this society is over.

Considering this issue as applied to this board, what can ordinary members, not moderators, do about somebody posting racist bullshit? I know there is the report bad post button, but I am more thinking of how the rest of us should respond and deal with racist/inflammatory posts.

Is that really how you want to be measured? By how insipid you can be? If rising above that unanimated blather is too much to ask, at least sink to level that is relatively stimulating.
Frankly, if I am going to expend the energy to react, I would much prefer to react to the truly detestable and repugnant, rather than to the merely tiresome.
So if your raison d'être is to chafe like a tag in a cheap t-shirt that demands attention but no lasting concern, congratulations. Boring enough to annoy and pedestrian enough to be easily forgotten.

I'm just tired of all the 'forced' political correctness.
Having to constantly worry if we are offending someone, what to call an ethnic group this month, etc.
People are going to get offended no matter what. As long as it's not hurting anyone then get over it.

Why does Nubly have to be politically correct? Why does the question offend anyone? It is a question. I am not defending any of his ignorant statements, but only his right to ask a question. Now he definately made it sound like "ALL BLACKS" instead of SOME BLACKS. I have met some blacks who were so helpful and so inteligent and so kind, you would not think twice about leaving your children with them. I have also met some asswhipes who think I owe them something because someone had slaves a hundred something odd years before I was even born. Those asswhipes piss me off. I still do not categorize all people as the same regardless of their color.
To simply answer his question: I dont know why some blacks feel they are owed something, but certainly all blacks dont behave that way.
I have met the type he described. I guess where he screwed up is when he said, why do "blacks" and many of you took that to mean: ALL BLACKS. He did not say ALL blacks. You tell me you never met a rude person who acts like they are entitled to everything and they go about their day in an angry fashion "those blue eyed devils". He was talking about the blacks that behave that way. Maybe it is the minority, maybe only 5% behave that way? 20%?30? Anybody who says they dont know what type Nubly is describing is lying. Maybe he screwed up the delivery, but it is a fact.
Somepeople do carry themselves in a manner as if they are entitled to things or angry about things I had nothing to do with.
You want an example? Reginald Denny was the white truck driver in LA after the Rodney King beating. Those were angry blacks who felt they were wronged and had to try and kill an innocent white man to make their point.
I'll give you a White example of something similar: Tim McVeigh

Actually any thread that poke fun at a major minority offends me. I'm Mexican-American; which means I WAS BORN HERE - for those of you w/out a clue. When I read threads such as Nubly's, it upsets me as well b/c I am a minority in this country and it's this kind of ignorance that breeds hate.Nubly said:

I choose not to take offense to it even though the question is more aptly applied across all skin colors as it raises a potentially valid issue if one is open to address it more generally instead of pumel the sheer stupidity of the exact question itself.
It's far too easy as a "community" of individuals to isolate, punish, and derride someone who doesn't conform to the "norms" of the "community" instead of using their "greater" knowledge/undestanding/sensitivity to bear in guiding or being guided.
Children say some of the most astounding things that will make you gasp in the pure innoncents of their observations. Even though as they get older they'll learn to temper or make PC their statements.
Observing that someone is black by the pigment of their skin has been "offensive" for how many years. Now we come up with terms like "African-American". Which is great until you find one who is from England or Australia or ... As a society we've done ourselves a great disservice by finding reason to take offense at everything. Are we as a people so fragile in our own awareness of self that names/lables etc define who and what we are?
