Wodin - my dad got his PhD from Virginia Tech and some of his lab buds were from WV. We went over there a lot to play golf b/c it was pretty and cheap - a resort called Pipestem.
Then I went out into the backwoods to where one of my dad's friends' dad lived. we went way into the mountains, off paved road onto gravel road for 15 miles, then went another 15 miles on dirt road before we saw the first place. it was a shack with 3 appliances on the porch and a station wagon out front that was up on cinderblocks that were sinking into the ground. it had the hood and enigine removed, as well as the entire top of the car was cut off. sweet.
we continued on and I thought it looked remarkably like Deliverance, and then we got to our destination trailer - a double wide - don't know how they got it back there.
The guy that owned it had a model-T ford in his "garage" which was some plywood propped up against a really big rock outcropping. he had to corvairs in the yard that were in perfect condisiton except that they had sunk up half the distance of the wheels into the ground.
there was a late 60's vette and then two big newer ford pick-em-up trucks.
we had dear me and later hunted for squirrels, which involved me just walking around pretending I didn't see anything.
then we raided an abandoned house that lived on his property (he owned nearly the entire mountain - he had been there a long time and kept buying more as he had money).
I shot a bow and arrow at some fake dear.
that night he showed us his chipped satellite box and we watched some tv and he told stories about the people around him and how they truly were mostly inbred, some had never been into the city.
what was scary was that as weird as I thought these people were, he was like - don't go that way on this road or you will run into some real red necks... I thought where we were was odd enough. he then told more stories of inbreeding.
the next day we hiked to the edge of his property and watched a wood mill at work.
then we went to a nature preserve and saw everyday animals in cages. that was sad, but I got to see a helicopter land to pick up a dude from an abulance that had been drunk driving.
I forget what town this was near, but it was way the fuck out. I know one of the guy slived near the capital... shit, I forget the name. charlestown? is that it? probably not.
this was further out though.
lots of coal mining.
have you read the book that the October Sky movie was based on?
