you probably read that somewhere in a fitness magazine. there really is no science as to where you arms should be in relation to the bottom of the lift.
if you are trying to get a max lift, just remember that a wider grip makes for less distance for the bar to travel. And we all know that a max effort on any lift can come down to those last few inches (or half inch).
with a narrow grip, you are really stressing the tri's and front delts. widen out the grip, and your lats and chest come into play more.
you said your middle finger is on the rings. that is a good enough distance. maybe you could try moving it to your index finger on the ring, see how that feels, and if you are comfortable with it.
