to think positively, or to think realistically?

I don't think that they are mutually exclusive.
I think that you can find something positive to say about any situation.
Even if it is "I am glad that's over".
IMO, positivity does not =delusional thinking

to think positively, or to think realistically?

Thinking realistically.

My favorite way to express realism is this:
An optimist says the glass is half full
A pessimist says the glass is half empty
A realist says there's water in the glass.

Plan for the worst but hope for the best. This should be any realists mantra.

to think positively, or to think realistically?

At least professionally speaking, positive thinkers almost always outperform realistic ones.

I'll preface this by saying I'm a realistic (and pragmatic) person myself. My business partner and I noticed that over time, positive, eager, glad-to-be-here people might start behind realistic thinkers but they almost always catch-up and ultimately pass them professionally. We even had a name for them -- "golden retrievers". They were smart, glad to please with their tongues hanging out and just glad to be here. It made such an impression on us that it's made me question my realistic view even to this day.

+1

Pragmatist myself. I'll generally brute force realism in to almost any situation but am careful not to come across as being negative / demotivating as some people are strongly driven by being in a positive frame of mind alone.

I've always considered myself an optimistic pragmatist, i.e., hope for the best, plan for the worst that way you're prepared for any potential outcome :D

However, the thread title is "Which is better?" and from a purely pragmatic perspective, it is better to think realistically. Being too positive is what leads one to marry badly (oh, they'll change), get deeply in debt (I know I'll get a better job soon) and so forth.

actually never mind that would not be Very OMEGA of me to hit anyone

but damn your a asshole for posting that pic

You can rationalize pragmatism all you'd like, but at the end of the day the optimist is going to do better.

very few things in my life have not been "positive" in some way. . .eventually. . .even if i totally fucked up, at least i had something to add to the "don't friggin' do that again" list. . .having such a list on hand can be a very valuable tool. . .anything that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
