Rule #1 - Everything works

Rule #2 - Nothing works for long.

Change up routines when you feel staleness coming on - ie every 4-5 weeks - be as varied as you can and experiment with as many traing philosophies, splits, and exercises you can. Simply changing the ORDER of exercises can induce a growth/strength spurt.

No one is the same.

Use a shotgun approach over time.

Only then will you know what works for YOU.

Simple good advice...

When resting between sets look around a bit and see what other people that look like they know what they are doing, are doing.

Read a Training book or reputable site for ideas.

I learn new ways to hit the group by reading or watching other's and asking questions. Then I try it, and sometimes it works..

Agreed. I learned most of what I know about training this way. A lot of observing, asking questions, trial and error, a little bit of reading. I'd say a lot of guys learned this way as well. And yeah, good tip, make sure you're watching the big boys.

Seriously this should be a sticky. I am so sick of seeing "whats better BBs or DBS", "Should i do Incline or Flat benches for chest", "Tricep extensions lay flat or sitting up" etc. etc.

Corn is VERY, VERY, right. EVERYTHING WORKS, BUT NOTHING WORKS FOR LONG.

The more variety the better. Any variation of a exercise will hit your muscles a different way. And as long as the overload and intensity is sufficent you will get bigger and stronger.

Good timing. I started to get antsy about 5 weeks into my routine, so I eliminated a set of everything to increase weight on the remaining working set(s). Woke me right on up!

true true.
to many times people complain and give up, after cutting out and trying a routine from flex magazine that doesnt work for them.(or goes stale)

I am different from joe blow and he is different from john doe......we all need different programs. the only way to know is trial and error.

bump for my buddy...

I think those are some great principles, and something every bodybuilder should definitly try to incorporate into their training.
Maybe 3 weeks into your current training split, start thinking of ways to switch it up so when week 4-6 rolls around you are prepared for your new system. Planning things in advance is a great way to make sure you don't get lazy and stay with the same plan to maximize muscle confusion, resulting in maximum growth.
Thanks!
