How far is too far to travel to get to a gym? I have 2 gym options available to me right now. One is an excellent gym with all the essentials and then some. Plus it has that sort of old school gym feel to it that I like, despite being very modern. The price and everything is good, but the one downside is that its really far away from my place. Im looking at anywhere from 20-30min travel time depending on traffic, etc.

The other option is right around the courner from me. It's also a good gym, but it cost more than the other place. Plus it's new so it doesnt really have much soul to it... if you know what I mean. Im no stranger to commuting to gyms. I used to drive right past 3 gyms to get to my gym, but it was still only a 10min drive. I think 20-30min is gonna be too much, but I wanted to get some other opinions. K to all helpfull responses.

Id go to which ever gym is going to be more conducive to your workout depending on machines, free weight selection ect..

I have about 5 gyms I go to depending on what I want to do on a given day

ill drive as long as 45 min to get to one gym cause its the only one that has 230 lbs dumbells.... :dance2:

Judging by your avatar, 3 hours is not too long for you to drive. For me within 15 mins each was is a must or the excuse for skipping a day or two starts to be weighted.

I would go to the gym that is least likely to frustrate you, also the gym that is the most helpful with the type of workout you are doing.

All gyms have different variations of equipment. Look around and see what gym has what. That would help me determine where I wanted to work out.

hope this helped.

If you were to open a Gym, demographics tell us 3 mile radius is your target market..
There you have the marketing answer..lol

I would go to the closest Gym that has the bare-bones required fee weights/ other machines that you use. I am a member of a newly built Gold's Gym. I have never been a huge fan of Golds but it is the closest one to me. I hate traveling more than 10-15 minutes day in and day out, and I just dont have time to do that.

Also, I travel out of State Alot and I can usually find a Golds location within ~20 minutes of my hotels when Im on the road.

Most of us older guys that went to college probably didnt realize how lucky we were to have such great on-campus facilities so close by, and to have so much time to kill.

This is the same thing that always f&^ks me up. The gym near me (5 min walk) has it's bench press machines back to back so u can't have a spotter. The next best thing is a NYSC 10-15 min away (self explanatory) and the best gym is at least 20 min away. I'm constantly training in different places..

Im with Narshh :chomp:

I gotta go 30-40 minutes every time to get to the gym. (depending on traffic). F-ing subway and a cab ride. I could go closer but it would be a "fitness club" and not a real gym.

I would travel the extra distance every time if I can get to gym with an all business atmosphere.....can't stand these f-in fitness clubs these days.

30-40min!! Damn. My travel time dont seem so bad now. And I know what you mean with these fitness clubs. It's hard enough just to find gyms now adays that have 150lbs dumbells... forget the 200lbs ones. And dont get me started on those FUCKING RUBBER WEIGHTS!!

you gotta remember you are gonna be driving there 5-6 times a week..... how long b4 you get sick of it?

ksbst9mm.... pluss the price of gas does not help either

Where the hell do you guys live? The town im in now is only 100k people and it has 15 gyms. The town I lived in 3 years ago was 30k people and it had 7 gyms?

it must be nice to have options, nearest gym other than where i lift is 45 mins

Yeah man, I'm in the same boat.... I live in the sticks, and my gym is prob 40mins away, and the ride doesnt bother me in the slightest..... Yours is 20-30mins away? Dude, that's not far at all if it's got what you are looking for..... I've joined some shitty gyms in the past, and quit almost as fast as I joined, and lost alot of money in the process..... So, suck it up, drive the distance, and be happy you are in a good place..... Again, 20-30mins isn't bad bro..... Go for it....

Go with closer... if you want to do AM cardio, you don't want to be driving 30 minutes.

No more than 5 minutes for me. Of course I live in AZ, so we have a fitness complex at practically every intersection.

I'd go for the one farther away - cause after getting there, you won't have the urge to leave, and maybe you'll hang around extra long.

20-30 minutes for todays traffic isnt too much, -if you have the time-.

Dont worry for the extra cost, youll save in gas that, not to mention risking a wreck, an idiot bumping your car, or at least a flat tire at night. If you go to the gym at night as most of us do.

I'm lazy, I picked the one thats 15 mins walk from my apartment over a hardcore one thats 30 mins drive away

Of course it sucks, and is full of the kind of kids who post about spring break cycles but it saves on gas :)
