When does the body begin using stored fat as energy?

SoreArms said:
I always assumed that the body uses glycogen first, then when this source is tapped, it uses stored fat. Today, a guy I work with (ex- competition BB) told me that when glycogen stores are full, the body likes to keep them that way so it will use stored fat as a source of energy before it uses glycogen.

im sorry jkruz but this is the post..... i didnt know anything about his training schedule

Current training schedule (soon to change, I start classes next monday)

Cardio 3-4 days per week, HIIT in the mornings

Evenings
Monday- Heavy Legs workout/abs
Tues- Chest/tris/lower back
Wed. - Off
Thurs - Back/bis/abs
Friday - Shoulder/light leg workout (leg presses,calfs)/lower back/aux
Sat/sun - Off (sometimes do more aux and cardio on these days)

Diet-
M-F follow a clsoely monitored 50/30/20 P/F/C, all meals logged and keep track of all macros.
Sat-Sun Don't trakc macros, but I don't pig out either. Mostly eat the same foods, but I have more freedom to mix in shit without the head ache of counting (ex. 3 slices of tomato, couple slices of onion, my moms food, etc.)

But how did we get into my training and diet schedule?

Ok.. here's my only question.

If the body uses

1) fat for fuel while at rest..
2) a combo of fat and carbs during moderate exercise... and
3) pure carbs during highly intense exercise..

Why do we lose muscle if we stop weightlifting, even if we still have sufficient protein in our diet?

During the 3 scenarios listed above, I didn't see one where our body was burning protein for energy, as long as we have some carbs or fat for it to use.
?

no.. it's something like the percentage of calories used while at rest is mostly fat cals..

I'm trying to find the place I saw the post the first time..

so you are saying that i will lose more fat by walking than sprinting, how is that?
Because walking for a long duration is extremely aerobic. Doing a lot of sprints can lead to an anerobic state (and even if it isn't its not an activity that optimizes fat burning).

So why do so many people recommend sprinting as a form of cardio that burns the most fat while retaining the most muscle? Not a call-out, but a serious question.

Incase you don't know what V02max is (I didn't until I looked it up)

The amount of oxygen your body can process determines how efficiently your body uses carbohydrates, proteins, and fats as energy sources. V02 max is a prediction of maximal oxygen consumption in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of your body weight per minute (ml/kg/min).

What role does V02 max play in burning fat?

A high V02 max promotes greater fat mobilization and utilization at rest and at stress exercise heart rates. By increasing your V02 max you will be training your body to use fat as its main source of energy instead of glycogen.
