I was woundering when did steroids first get there bad rep? and who was the cry baby that lost and said they were cheated?

also does any of the bad rep have proof of this? I mean is there any proof besides presicription drugs should be taken according to a doctors supervision and not take by the fist full?

They were legal back in the 80's, was after the Germans started kicking our ass in the olympics did they catch media attention, this spread into Pro sports and thanks to the great gov When the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990 became law, steroids were placed into the same class as narcotic painkillers and barbiturates by defining them as Schedule III substances. This law put possession punishable by up to a year in prison and a fine of at least $1000. Additionally, selling steroids or even possessing steroids with an intent to sell may face up to five years in prison plus parole and sizable fines.

While there is a federal law against the use of steroids, each state does have the ability to set their own laws as well. This makes it utterly important to people who choose to use steroids to make sure they know the laws in the state they are in. So, each state can decide where to place anabolic steroids in the Substance schedules, how to define anabolic steroids and how to punish crimes related to these laws.

With this law, not only did the use of steroids become illegal, it changed the way that people who chose to still use them could learn about them. For example, because these steroids are illegal, law enforcement started monitoring chat rooms on the Internet as well as website claiming to sell steroids.

These laws bring up an interesting dynamic because most people will agree that steroids have the potential to cause serious health problems. The differing opinions, however, come because some people believe that it is possible to use anabolic steroids safely and effectively. The problems arise when, because of the laws, people who use steroids cannot get the information they need to use the drugs safely and cannot get the medical care (in the form of regular blood work and physician advice) to make sure they are not doing irreversible damage to their systems.

That being said, often times professional athletes have trainers, coaches and team physicians that can give them accurate advice in relation to steroids as well as the medical care needed to prevent huge problems and can therefore use them safely (of course, this isn’t taking into consideration the “cheating” factor that many people associate with steroid use.) Amateurs and adolescents often get their information through hear-say and don’t have access to the medical observation that should go along with steroid use and therefore are at a higher risk of using them improperly and unsafely.

This is why many people are against the illegalization of steroids – because it prevents the flow of information as well as situations necessary for studies of both short and long term effects of steroids

in UK I believe its legal to possess for personal use but not to sell, you can even bring some in from the plane and just say its for personal use and they let you go with it.... Here where I live in Ukraine the cops also dont bother people with steroids since its not something that will make people rob and steal to get a fix.... U.S laws are crazy, I lived in US for 12 years and moved back to my home land...dont get me wrong US is a great country but the court systems are ruff in some states expecially for people that cant stay away from doing "bad" things

yep thats right bro. legal to possess in the uk as long as its for personal use. but selling and supplying is illegal. even if its just getting some for your mate, thats classes as supplying.

Steroids first got a bad rep in the 1988 summer olympics when Ben johnson (Canadian) kicked Carl Lewis's (USA) ass in the 100 meter, then Ben popped positive for winstrol. The media circus began and the dawn of the "steroids are bad" era was born. The anabolic and controlled substances act of 1990 made it all official.

I think it really gained traction when Lyle Alzado came on TV and told the world his steroid use caused his cancer.

I'd rank the reasons why steriods have such a bad rap as:

1) The rise of oral antidepressants: Testosterone was a necessary evil for older, depressed men before.

2) The war on masculinity: Everything manly became bad -- guys are supposed to be all empathetic now.

3) Genuine cases of abuse: Testosterone is an addictive drug and in some people, it's far more addictive than for others. Some use it to self-medicate for depression and mask symptoms instead of seeking treatment.
