When can you call yourself a bodybuilder?

someguy

New member
Now, I've been thinking (it happens from time to time), when can you call yourself a bodybuilder...Is it how long you been training or how big you are....

I think it is how big you are, I don't consider myself a bodybuilder.....I think you got to be at least 220LB..at 6. feet...ofcourse it depens on how tall a person is...

What do you guys think??

- Someguy

Imo you are bodybuilder when you start to eat and train=build up your body. The size has nothing to do with it.

Take a look at the word and break it down....
Body builder

I think when you totally commit yourself to making your body the very best that it can be...... so I'd say training not size...

Because with training will come the size or definition.

you can call yourself a bodybuilder when ever you want. If it is true or not is another question but i would agree with basskiller

Well, I dunno. Im 5'11" and 250lbs....a little pudgy though from my layoff, prolly 18% now and I dont know if I have ever or ever will consider myself a bodybuilder and definatly not a powerlifter, I am just an average joe who likes the feeling of a good workout :)

i have been calling myself a bodybuilder since i started working out religously and eating like i am suppossed to...even though i have lost a lot of size since my surgery...was 6'1" 240 lbs....now am 6'1" 200 lbs...i still consider myself a bodybuilder:fro:

IMO.....Wrongun is right, you can call yourself a bodybuilder whenever you like. It's when others start ASKING if you're a bodybuilder that you know you've arrived.

Bodybuilder is a lifestyle. It's a mind set. You live to build your body. To do this you eat, train, and rest accordingly. You make sacrifices most would never dream of in order to better your physique and mentality. You don't just lift weights. You lift with a purpose and with a pasion unmatched by an average human. You put your mind to achieving an unatainable goal...Perfection. You don't see muscles, you see sculpture. You don't lift to fluff your ego with big poundages. You lift to sculpt a masterpiece. You don't do it for any one else...You do it for you...Because it's who you are.

When you utilize all aspects of producing a better body. That includes resistance training, cardio, stretching, eating properly and whatever you can think of associated with fitness (i.e. use of proper form and technique).

Ciao

You guys are describing weight trainers. You are a bodybuilder when you decide to step on stage and compete. A bodybuilder is someone who competes in bodybuilding contests. Everyone else are people who live a healthy lifestyle to better themselves physically. I call them weighttrainers.

I must disagree to that. There are competitive bodybuilders and recreational bodybuilders. A bodybuilder does more than train with weights.

In My opinion, I think you can call yourself a bodybuilder when you step on stage, maybe not win but place accordingly.

when you do your first show, then you are truly a bodybuilder...might be a shitty one but i guess that would mean you are one

Anybody who has made a committment to build their body through exercise. I would call a bodybuilder. Doesnt matter what anybody thinks, doesnt matter if you compete professionally or not. Its a heart issue. Thats my take anyway.

God Bless

Dunno about suddenly "becoming" a bodybuilder.... What I do know is that when I am lazy and get fat I tell people I am a powerlifter:D

WRONG WRONG WRONG FUCKING WRONG......THERE WE GO WITH THE PREMADONA EGOS AGAIN.

YOU ARE A BODY BUILDER WHENEVER THE FUCK YOU DECIDE TO MAKE A LIFESTYLE CHANGE TO

B U I L D YOUR BODY

B O D Y B U I L D I N G

Now if you decided to step on stage........you are a.........watch carefully.......I'll only spell this once for the slow people that give BB a bad name of all muscle no brain......duhhhhhh which way did he go......which way did he go?

C O M P E T I T I V E B O D Y B U I L D E R

Now.....let's say it together class.......all at once.......Competitive Body Builder

And class....remember what we call a person who makes the life style change to enhance his/her physique?

ANS: That's right class.........very good.....Body Builder.

Ok Class.....next weeks assignment.......we will discuss Physical Fitness from 7,000 B.C. Mesopotamia to Present.

Whenever the bodybuilding lifestyle becomes second nature to the extent that your whole life revolves around the sport and you find that the sacrifices that are necessary to keep the physique you worked so hard to achieve no longer seem like sacrifices. I know loads of people who train with weights but they are not defined or are just plain fat, they have no symmetry and like some pretend BB's they neglect certain bodyparts that is why they are not "BODY"builders. Not everyone wants to compete - I'm sure you've seen loads of people give reasons for why they bodybuild - pussy , health or the discipline it gives you but everybody will say that the main reason that they do it is for themselves - in short you get bit by the bug and you stay bit!

Some pro athletes like football players come pretty close to being built like bodybuilders - does this make them bodybuilders?

For all intents and purposes, they are very close to bodybuilders.

But ultimately they probably aren't because they constantly risk injury and are measured on toughness and results as opposed to physique. You aren't going to be much of a "bodybuilder" if you're hammering your bones and joints with the daily demands of pro sports.

So in the end bodybuilding is a very specific thing. I like to think of myself as moving towards "bodybuilder type" diet and "bodybuilder style" training (not the same as the weight training I used to do when starting out).

At 5'8" 188 lbs I can't be called a bodybuilder, but if I followed this type of diet and training with a couple more cycles, at 210 lbs and ripped there would be no other choice but to say "this is a bodybuilder."

In the end it's obvious a bodybuilder type regimen is an ideal. The best ones at it combined with drugs and genetics actually win contests. Others are striving for the ideal.

But 99.9% of people don't even strive for this. These are "weight trainers" at best.

Ok.....I guess I'm the only one in here with College & married to an English Major whom is a walking dictionary.

Weight Train: General Term, means almost anything. In our language if we said that to a person....it's so general that it would be followed up by a question. When you answer a question that causes another question....it's poor english. So be specific.......if a person answers a question with:
"yaw...I weight train so that I'm not a girly man"
the person questioned would require further inquiry.

The next question would be:
"What kind of weight training do you do?"
Ans:
"I work on physique/health etc"
Inquisitor:
"Oh.....you build your body....you are a Body Builder....nice".

Or the questioned person could have said:
"I train for strength".

Inquisitor:
"Oh....you must be a power lifter....cool".

Throw in the word Competitive into any of the terms.....powerlifter or bodybuilder or anything thing else.........it changes the meaning again.

The day I had to sit down and figure out how I was going to carry 5 meals w/ me to work, where I was going to reheat the chicken, get up and do AM cardio and hit the gym before my lunch hour was over.

Then when I started giving up my social life to get in an extra 30 min of cardio....

If I plan ahead, I can do all the cardio and go out a few times a month to show off my biceps LOL!

Well there are plenty of regular guys who are 220 at 6ft and are definetly not bodybuilder and there are plenty of guys at 170 and 6ft who are (lightweights ect)

just my opinion

Coincidentally, Calves O Death and I were talking about this at dinner last night. We both arrived at the conclusion that we could indeed be considered Bodybuilders, as we read, study, continuously seek out more information on how to make our workouts, and subsequently, our bodies, stand out from the rest. Neither one of us will ever be Competitive Bodybuilders, but bodybuilders nonetheless.

I see it as the difference between being a "Bodybuilder" and being interested at "Building your Body". You can be interested in building your body without being a "Bodybuilder".....
