In what situations do you get nervous?

Generally, Do you see yourself as a confident person?

Not getting nervous suggests that you don't often attempt to surpass your own expectations or don't often work near to your limits.

^^^ Yes, nervousness or fear are challenges to be overcome. If you don't face them means you don't reach high enough. Without fear you'll never have real courage.

exactly!! if you're never nervous, you're never challenging yourself. . .i get nervous all the damn time. . .even when i'm doing something i've done a bunch of times. . .like sitting in the witness chair testifying (and getting cross-examined) about a forensic accounting project that i've prepared. how you react to the nerves is what separates the men from the boys. plus, the "nervous" thing is part of the rush. . .i like it. :)

I am very confident in cross examinations. I have a uncanny way of unnerving people on the stand and making them mess up really bad. I have had many police officers tell me that mine has been the toughest cross exam they have ever had.

There are certain judges that are intimidating as hell, but I'm starting to learn to take their tirades or snide remarks in stride.

I have never been able to play group sports at all. I'm too shy about it. I am athletic, but I choke every time people are watching me play.

Are those guy cops? Because a little tip in life, guys will say anything to an attractive women if it helps in conversation. I'm not saying it isn't true, just be skeptical of where it is coming from.

I'm always most confident after I have lost or failed. The second attempt is always easy for me, the fear of failure or loss is no longer present.

It was ones that I basically made a complete ass of on the stand. They were not making it up.

i LOVE when you people badger me! all i have to do is maintain my composure. . .smile. . .be courteous and cooperative. . .heck. . .if the attorney that's crossing me is someone that i've never worked with before, i treat the experience like a job interview. . .i want to be working for them next week. . .it usually works out pretty well too. . .i get a LOT of business from people that cross me. . .i come to the table prepared, i know my business pretty well, i LOVE to talk about what i do for a living, and, it doesn't hurt that i look pretty good in a suit. . .i clean up real nice. :)

once i'm there in the chair and i'm answering questions i get in a zone and when i'm faced with a question that i don't know the answer to. . .i just say "i don't know". . .shit. . .i don't know everything. . .who does?? i'm not embarrassed by the fact that i don't know everything. . .plus, i rely on my attorney to protect me from having to try to answer questions that were outside of the scope of my engagement. sure. . .i have bad days once in a while. . .everybody does. but, the few times where my testimony has not been as effective as it could have been, it was almost always because my attorney wasn't properly prepared and didn't help direct the flow of my testimony.

Sometimes though an "I don't know" response will mean the whole case gets thrown out. So, you can't rely on it.

I got a meth case thrown out because I got the cop all flustered about the chemical components of different household chemicals that he had claimed in a search warrant were the precursers to meth. He started saying "I don't know" and kept on saying it over and over. I finally said, you really don't even know whether any of the chemicals are the actual precursers or not. By that time, he was so flustered that he said "I don't know."

Game over.

One of my best days ever.

(by the way, the chick really wasn't guilty. They were just using a charge against her to try to coerce a confession from her bf, who was the guilty party.)

the "i don't know" response is almost always in response to a question where i am being asked to speculate or opine on something that was outside of the scope of my engagement (which is the quickest way to get my testimony tossed). . .and. . .you people always have a follow-up question to that answer which allows me to explain my response. . .worst case scenario, my attorney goes back to that question on redirect and we get to discuss why that question was not considered or was not included in my analysis. sometimes the judge or family law master will decide that the question is important enough to be explored. . .and i end up with another engagement. i've never gotten burned by an "i don't know". . .but i have gotten quite a bit of additional work. as i'm sure you know. . .for expert witnesses, there's quite a screening process that takes place each time i sit in front of a judge or family law master that's never seen me before. . .i have to demonstrate, through documentation and tesitmony, that i have achieved a certain level of expertise before i'm even allowed to tell my story. . .after i've jumped through all those hoops, i get a little bit more leeway, and a little more "benefit of the doubt" than your garden variety witness.

you should see the look on their face when my answer is "i used my professional judgement". . .sometimes they look like they're gonna stroke-out. . .but, 20 years of experience dealing intimately with small businesses and their owners has given me a unique insight and wealth of knowledge not possessed by the masses. . .it's why i'm sitting in that chair in the first place.

When a job is done and the clients are ecstatic, when I've been paid in full and I've made no new enemies.

Then, I am for sure one cocky, confident biatch.

Until then, I should be up for an academy award.
