What's this from Dave Tate???

This is a question on Elitefts and Dave's answer to it. It just kinda contradicted a few of the things I have learned about the Westside guys. Any thoughts?

Q-what were the latest max effort exercises you used during your last CIRCA MAX PHASE? and what are the one u have used in the past which HAVE/HAVEN'T worked for you?

A-The list we havebeen working off for the past year or so is:

Lower Body:
1.suspended good morning with cambered or saftey squat bar.
2. Low and high box squat with cambered or saftey squat bar.
3. Deadlift while standing or 3 to 4 inches
4. Deadlift with plates off floor 3 to 4 inches
5. Good mornings with saftey squat or cambered squat bar.
6. Deadlifts against bands.
7. Reverse Band deadlifts.
* We usally pull one time per month, squat one time per month, and goodmorning one time per month, and no max effort work one time per month.

Upper Body:
1. 2-3-4 board press with and without bands
2. Chain press: load bar to 70% and begin adding one chain each side with each set.
3. Floor press with and without bands
4. JM press
5. Cambered bar press with and without boards.
6. Reverse band press with blue or green band.
7. Close grip band press. We use either two mini or one mini and a purple and work up.
* This is no order to what we do. We just do whatever we feel like. About once a month there will be no max effort work.





No max effort work?? Whatever happened to Louie calling that a cop-out?? Maxing 52 weeks a year??
Plus, that would make GM's only 33% of the ME lifts. I'm confused??
 
It is called cybernetic periodization. Sometimes after banging away real heavy for a period of time, you just have to take a break. I personally take off a squat workout occasionally, but never miss a bench. This allows me some extra recovery time on the lift I compete in. The WSB guys that do full meets probably have the same problem with occasional fatigue and overtraining that I do, but they overcome that by skipping the max effort stuff, and just doing the supplementals.

The program is constantly changing. They used to do 65 percent on dynamic bench day. Now some are down as low as 45 percent of raw. I did not have to skip any workouts for a while, but as I got stronger, I found that I could not keep up the same pace. As you get stronger, the workouts are going to take more out of you. You can only do so much to aid in recovery. Sometimes you just have to take a break.

Also after talkin to Bob and Dave...alot of the times that they skip a max effort exercise, lower body anyway, is because they are on a heavy band cycle. It is hard to go through a circa max phase...or a speed strength phase and still maintain your ME work.
 
I pretty much hit bands with my boards often, and i skip my Board day or ME day for me at least once every 5 to 6 weeks. I have too. Same with box squata with bands. I tear up with those.
 
i friggin love to squat.

i kills me to miss a DE squat day, but the following week i feel healed up and ready to go.

Notice that you do NOT take the whole day off..... you just do other stuff like really heavy reverse hypers, or something else.
 
Like Irish said youi just skip the max work and still do the supplementary stuff. I remember that when i did my circa max phase i had to skip a ME exercise on squat day because my back started to cramp on DE day becaue it was still so sore from ME day. Davae said that they alsp will pull a heavy sled instead of the ME exercise.

When he said they pull ,squat and GM one time per month i'm guessing that is year round which is a little different than what i am used to reading and hearing. Remember that they change things up in order to see if something else works better every so often.
 
Yea, ok that makes sense. I'm in the process of hitting the heavy tension box squats now leading up to my meet and my back was cramping so bad last box squat session. I see what you guys are saying.
