I have a bag of 10lb Optimum Whey... i must have forgot about it, its half full. Ive bought other bags of protein since, thinking i was done, but i still have this bag. Im assuming its 1-2yrs old. Is it worthless?

Re: What's the life of protein?

This will depend on how the original product has been stored and/or the associated ingredients. In some cases, you can store whey protein for up to three years. Have a look on your product for an expiration date. If you can't find that then look for the product lot number. It will be a long series of numbers. Usually (but not always as manufacturers have different identifying codes) the last four digits will represent the month and year the product is good until. If the product has been opened or if you are in any doubt then it is best to throw it out, as hard as that may be to hear.

storage conditions.... cool dry place and well sealed.

also how it was stored prior to you getting it... have gotten protein that was stored in an unconditioned warehouse (had to explain to the genius that whey does not do particularly well kept in 120deg heat) that was bad (rancid) on arrival with nearly 2 years left of expiry.

i should know its bad by taste? Tastes and looks fine, im worried that im finishing up the bag and theres no beneficiary value to it.

as with most food, tastes, looks smells fine-- usually means that its fine. Though with the amount of preservatives and coloring that goes into some of these formulas, the protein may be degraded but still edible. If you get excessive gas and bloating from it, its probably degraded
