what would you do?

stilleto

ELITE MENTOR
EF VIP
i have two interns working for me. One is awesome. love her.
the other is... odd. this is her first week and she's kind of argumentative.
She overheard me talking to someone about some paint colors for our lobby, and how I am having someone come in to do some work on the building (new carpet and pressure wash the outside) and she stopped what she was doing and said, "why are YOU doing that?"
I said, "because it's a small company, and we don't have a building manager, and I like to decorate and our lobby looks dated and I want it to look clean and modern."
She said, "Can I choose the paint?"

um. no.

anyway, she has a strange habit. She hums. non stop. or maybe it's not humming- it's more like a monotone groan. very low, but enough so that people hear it. She works in a large room of cubicles of other interns and they all hear it when it gets very quiet.

here's my question. do i address it?

if she is a good employee and works hard, leave it alone unless someone complains.

What he said! There will always be someone in the work place that annoys the crap out of you. If they are good then you just have to bite your tongue. Unless it's so bad it is risking losing other good employees then you have to say something.

If she's an intern and she is that annoying, get rid of her. they are a dime a dozen and you can probably find someone who isn't a PITA. Tell her about the noise and give her a chance, but if she's continuing then easy decision IMO.

Yes, I'm a heartless bastard.

Ask your local Pastor or are you not allowed in Church?

well first of all, since the church is so open and accepting, i'm probably not allowed in there.

but why would I ask someone who has no grip on reality about a business situation?

Does Pastor = priest? because then i'd be asking someone who most likely has never worked at an actual company as well, right?

suggesting i ask my pastor is about as relevant as suggesting I ask the guy pumping my gas.

well that's why I mentioned a few things. So far, she hasn't been great. she complains a lot, doesn't like what she does (the other intern likes it), and only wants to do the "fun stuff" like post on twitter (not going to happen). She gets bored by doing research stuff and finds everything "strange".

and although nobody has formally complained, it's a constant thing that everyone has noticed. I had lunch with her and the other interns today and she made noises the entire time.

I'm assuming this is unpaid? Working for free sucks, so I'd give her a little more leeway. It sounds like you got lucky with your other intern. I mean, yeah you could let her go, but there's no guarantee the next intern won't suck even more. Especially if this is just a summer type thing.

Talk to her in private and ask how shes enjoying her time there, if she has any feedback for you (being a small company, you like to get all the feedback when you can get). After shes done talking about her feelings, position it as a suggestion.

I know he took a dig at you but given that both my parents are priests, this is sort of offensive to me.

And for the record, before they were priests my mother was a nurse and head of the disease control department at her hospital and my father was an opera singer but had held plenty of "normal" gainful employment as well.

And in their roles in the church they ran a business, a school, an office and had many experiences that other people with other jobs and managerial positions deal with including but not limited to problems with people they hired, conflicts with board members, budget concerns, and so on.

Nef we both have similar relative back rounds.....interesting...

Were they legalistic at all? in how they applied their beliefs?

Not one bit, Omega....it's one reason i managed to turn out somewhat normal. There was little emphasis on sin, and a lot of emphasis on Jesus, love, acceptance, forgiveness. They never forced anything down my throat, though they are certainly happy I've been going to church again recently lol, but only because it seems to be making me happy.

that's actually what I was thinking.
i cleared the conference room so I could talk to them each privately for a few minutes tomorrow.
i was just going to tell the other one that she's doing a great job, but this one, i was going to ask her exactly what you said, then maybe say that she seems nervous and say "i notice that you have a habit of humming or making some noise... is that because you're bored, or just a something you're not aware of?"

I'm sorry if it offended you.
omega likes bringing up church and religion to me, knowing full well that I have no interest in either. i find it to be obnoxious, so i was being obnoxious in return, but i didn't mean to imply anything towards your parents, who I'm sure are lovely and intelligent, being that I consider you that way.

please accept my apology.

We're good....no worries.

MAybe she has Terits???( spelling?) HAve a guy i see at the store and he whoops and yells....the whole 9 yards. Great guy and I feel bad for him. So maybe its that.

Perhaps that was offensive to stilleto. They've had these interactions before. It's always ok for omega to take digs at stilleto but if she returns them he is offended.

I always remember the church never had a shortage of hypocrites at all. Thank you Jesus!

Your decision seems legit letto. But remember they are only interns. And if one of mine was complaining all the time and pissing me off I wouldn't hesitate to get rid of her

I never thought that it could be involuntary, but you're right. since she's free, i'm torn between just letting it go, or saying something (OBVIOUSLY i'd be very sensitive), or letting HER go. If she's not happy, that kind of settles it.

The very first line of my post was that I knew he had taken a dig at her, so there's really no need to point that out. And I was the one who got offended, not him in this case, because clearly it was quite personal to me.

As I said to her, though, it's already forgotten, and I wouldn't have said anything if you had not addressed it again.

As for your comment about hypocrites, there are plenty in all walks of life, all believe systems or lack thereof. But some of the best people I've ever known and one girl who is nearly single handedly saving my life right now I've also found through the church.

And for the record, his comment is not ok with me either, and I find it as unacceptable to dig at someone for what they believe as I do for what they do not believe.

But I think I had every right to say my piece and I think I did so respectfully.

you do, and you did. i'm glad you told me.
i'll try to remember.

(can't promise that I will, and it's a subject I have some strong opinions on, but i'll try not to offend you). :)

I'm not generally offended by athiesm or other questions on my faith....so you're probably in the clear. I've gone through periods of not believing or having strong questions myself.

I just get protective of the fam lol

I saw that. My point was that it always seems ok by omega to dig at stilleto for her beliefs (or lack thereof), but he gets upset when the shoe is on the other foot. Thus the hypocrite line.

I also never disputed your right to say what you did, nor do I think you were disrespectful.

Balls Deep.

CEO have you ridden in on your white horse to save the day ?

good for you!

she take shots and me, I take some at her no ones complaining except you...

carry on..

your memory is shit bro.

I've lost track, are you still at the old job, or did you get the one within horseback-riding distance of home?

Also, I would probably go balls deep in that intern...assuming she is young and hot. Hell she's free after all!!!!!11

lol.. young, yes.
not sure if she'd be considered hot. she's around 5'7" and i'm guessing she weighs 80 pounds. seriously.

she may be humming to distract herself from the fact that she is hongry.... tell the bish to eat a burger already.

now if she is a c cup and 80 lbs, that might be hot.

Am I right in assuming that the intern that you like IS hot?

I see you're in here horn dogging up folk's thread again. Ima buy you a flesh light for Christmas or hell even your birthday, which ever comes first.

they come in extra long and extra wide right?
I was gonna say I would PM Puddz and ask, but Plank told me Puddz has an extra small one, so I guess we can look it up on the internet.

Yes, if it is annoying, definitely address it.
Here's how i would do it:
Get her in your office/private space and tell her:
"I have noticed that you make a humming noise while you work. When you hum in the office I feel distracted by the noise. Could you please stop the humming ? Thank you".

LOLZ @me E-stalking you brah. its the lure of the arm band tat that keeps me coming around bro.

Tell her if she doesn't stop that stupid humming you are going to rabbit punch her in her cock sucking throat.

the intern I like is not hot at ALL. she's sweet and bright and happy and round.
This one btw, is really flat as a board. She actually looks like she's trying to disappear.

I think you should take the skinny one out to lunch. Go to a buffet and handcuff her to that buffet line and tell her she can't leave until all the food is gone.

lol @ "round"

see that proves my point - the round one is happy... the skinny one is not happy...
she needs to eat!

no thanks.
She looks like she wants to fold in on herself.
Okay give me about 30 mins I can fix this. Bring me the skinny one, I could have her preggers in the matter of hours or less, she will gain weight and be happy. Problem Solved:D glad to help you don't mention it

I would under NO circumstances even mention the humming, if it is a tick related to something like OCD, Tourette's, or anxiety it can blow up in your face, speacially if you fire her later, I know they are "free" but it's not worth getting some bogus discrimination accusation....

When a girl/woman ices a girl/woman it's called "Bras Icing Bras". Also the girl/woman has to get on both knees and chug a bud ice.

lol. funny thing is i'm serious.

Iggy, I feel better about the world in general knowing that you are out there.

so, what happened letto?

I talked to her, but we got interrupted before I could get to the issue of her nervous habit. She's very socially awkward though- like she said lunch confuses her because she doesn't know what to do.

Meanwhile, all the interns in the room have been agreeing "hey, lets take a break and have lunch" and she doesn't know what to do because the one person in the room who is not an intern has been coming to have lunch with me. I told the intern to just eat with the other interns.
She also said she doesn't know what people do. I explained their roles and told her not worry about things so much.

yeah, give her a hot dose of that retard DNA, it should help things.

The list she mentioned often overlap with each other and also ASD (autism spectrum disorders). She might be undiagnosed Asbergian or one of the others mentioned. On one hand as a mentor to an intern, you want her to know what is expected as professional behavior. Maybe mention the humming thing as not something that would cause a company to fire her like sloppy attire, but that it would be more PROFESSIONAL to try and curb it even if she needs to do it to self sooth. Offer it as advise. It likely won't change a thing, but you'd be doing your service as a mentor to a newbie who is there to learn about company life.

Personally, the humming would be distracting. Turn up the musak please.
