steve martin is raised by a black family out in the country. then he strikes out on his own. he works at a gas station and then for a circus for a while guessing people's weight and meets the woman of his dreams(but not before he gets arguably raped by the motorcycle daredevil chick a few times - "special purpose"). she leaves him after thinking he won't amount to shit. even the thermos song could not stop this from happening. after leaving the circus, he finds out that something he invented back at the gas station he worked at, a device used to keep glasses from sliding down your nose, has become huge and sold bazillions. It is called Optigrab. So Naven(Steve Martin) becomes rich, gets his girl back, and moves into a giant mansion. Eventually he loses it all when a massive lawsuit is filed against Optigrab because it has made people cross-eyed. But he was sending money back to his family every month, and his family invested it and became loaded. They, along with his wife, saved Naven when he was a bum and took him back home to live in the country.
