New member
here are my options for eatting at college, i dont know what im going to do.

carbs
white bread (buns, rolls, pizza, etc)
white rice (covered in sugary stirfry sauce)
pasta (pretty nasty though, kinda overcooked)
powdered white mashed potatoes
french fries
the batter that some fried stuff has on it - does this even count??
lettuce
uncooked +half frozen brocolli

protein
cheese (from pizza, occassion rigotta from pasta)
eggs
fish (dry as a bone though, and i eat tuna outta the can- much worse then that even!)
chicken - whole little mini chickens with almost no meat
chicken - nugget type things, not solid meat, not all white meat
chicken - buffalo wings
steak - about 50% lean, worst cut ive even seen, tastes like ass
pork/turkey/etc - i dont eat these meats, but if i did, these are the driest, worst cuts ive ever seen
hamburgers - mcdonalds quality beef

fats
only saturated fats (see above shitty meat cuts)
some saliddressings have soybean oil

Buy an electric skillet if you don't have a grill, you can cook eggs, bacon, whatever. It only takes like 5 minutes. Go to the store and buy tuna in a can, almonds, chicken breasts, flax oil, brown rice. I have a little cooker that boils water very quickly, you can steam vegetables and cook rice in it so easily. I am in college and I have to make do.

If you can pick up the latest Men's Health magazine, there is an excellent article on the "abs diet" which more importantly shares the foods that are good for diets and building muscle.
You mention carbs...stay away from white breads, they'll only add inches and fat. Pretty much everything you listed under your carb section isn't that good for you.
Try to go for whole grain breads, cereals, oatmeal - instant or not either is better than the other. Focus on light yogurt, orange juice, turkey and lean meats, fruits and vegitables, peanut butter is an excellent source of fiber, protein and good fats to reduce cholesterol. Mix these groups for different benefits. For instance, every morning i have a bowl of oatmeal, dannon light yogurt(90 cals. - no fat) and glass of light'n'healthy orange juice (fewer cals and less sugar than reg. oj.) For lunch i will have a turkey sandwhich...no mayo, maybe a slice of cheese, and of course on whole wheat bread...then another yogurt. These foods will help you throughout the day and will make a difference in college. I know that once i started eating right i began to learn more efficiently and effectively. Don't forget plenty of water...avoid soda.
I'm guessing from what you said you have only those choices you listed. Try to get as close to what i mentioned as you can. Avoid the mcD's beef, fries, pasta's, white breads, etc....if there is a sub shop around (subway, etc) that is still better than any of that.
You might even find it cheaper to for go the meal plans at school and hit the grocery store...i know that where i go meals end up costing about a hundred or more $'s per semester than shopping on my own...but of course thats not always the case.
Hope this information helps.

Buy a George Foreman, keep it in your dorm (even though it's technically not allowed at most schools, they don't check), that way you can cook up chicken and other lean meats. Obviously a mini-fridge is a must. Canned tuna is easy also. Get a sippy bottle or two, put some protein powder in it and carry it with you (dry) until you're ready to drink it...then just add cold water from a drinking fountain and shake it up well--I did this often during class.

Get to know what is served where/when, and what may be available to you that's not always on the menu--for example, where I went as an undergraduate always had egg whites at breakfast, you just had to ask for them. They also always had hard boiled eggs, so I usually snuck a few on my way out the door and stashed them in my fridge for a later snack. We also had a dining hall that always had awesome roasted turkey on M/W nights, etc. If there are non-battered grilled chicken sandwiches, obviousy just get one without the bun. A lot of campuses have stuff that you can eat, it's just a matter of knowing where it's hidden! Some schools are better than others though as far as food service. If you have a nice fitness/rec center, see if they have a food place there that offers healthier choices--I've seen a few of those (or find the area on campus where varity athletes live/eat). Luckily I went somewhere that was very health-conscious. I'm in graduate school now and from what I have seen of the food places on my current campus, I can easily see why all the freshmen get fat!
