What possesses people to become politicians?

  • Thread starter Thread starter lartinos
  • Start date Start date
some actually want to change the system and once they get in it they realize that whichever road they take there's a bigger more powerful asshole ready to run over everyone and everything in their way, so they either quit or strive to become one of those jerks when they realize its hopeless.

Some people enjoy political theory and philosophy/etc, some just like working with people and are extroverted some want power and control. Certain personalities will gravitate towards it.

The thread title should be changed to "What possesses people to enter into politics"?

Let me help you synthesize your post in a concise manner so everyone can understand your point. The point you are trying to get across makes a lot of sense, however, you do not have a clear thesis.

Here is your thesis.

Some people enter politics to become "public servants," simultaneously some people enter politics to become "quintessential politicians."

In your opinion...

my aunt's husband ran for some sort of political title, but did not win. i do not know the reason, but he is a good honest, hard working family man. i would have been interested in if his outlook changed, he changed, or his general inside knowledge if he had won. oh well

Maybe you are right about how I worded it, IDK.
The second half of what you wrote is completely wrong, I make threads like this all the time.
I know exactly what I'm doing by not saying my opinion..

wow, sure go ahead and elaborate and explain what is my personal opinion :D

Let me further elaborate, my dad was into politics in CR, he wanted to help people and of course make connections and climb the ladder, hopefully get into congress, etc in 99 he was consul of CR in L.A and NYC, let me break down how that went:

In L.A. the general consul was a POS who decided to "make up" a schedule, so ID renovation would be say Monday and Wednesday, visas Tuesday and Thursday and anything else Fridays, so if someone showed up Monday for a visa he'd turn them away, even though there was no set rule and it was not in the website, he just decided to do shit like that, my dad started helping people as they came and he got pissed off at dad for not following his "schedule" but he couldnt enforce it cuz it was all made up, people took days off to get help and they wouldnt help them, dad got sick and requested transf to NYC

In NYC the general consul wouldnt do dick and constantly had women in his office, I once went to visit and that day a 6.1 earthquake hit CR so calls were pouring in, the general consul was with some chick locked n the office, the female consul was doing her nails and the other consul was playing solitaire, dad was taking call after call giving people info, I got so pissed I asked the other consuls why they werent picking up the phone(not in a rude or accusing way), their reply: "because we dont want to, you pick it up" oh and I was 14...

Here's the kicker, some dudes from Taiwan showed up and offered to pay $2000 per visa and they were needing hundreds, they wanted them no questions asked no backgrounds checked, the general consul said yes and told dad to sign them to authorize, dad told him no since he wouldnt just give them away without checking their background, regardless of the money... sick and tired of the corruption and laziness dad resigned, in the next couple of days the general consul reported about 200 passports stolen and pinned it on dad, there was this huge investigation, dad's name was brought through the mud, his name was in the paper, eventually they found out it was the other dude and he was convicted but no one ever apologized or made public that my dad was innocent. The call finally came... in 2005, the next day after he passed away... :( Needless to say my mom almost flipped shit on the girl on the phone

you have lousy reading comprehension skills and use poor grammar as well; if your goal is to try to impress people rather than further the discussion at hand, you should try a new approach.

i think people become politicians because they have strong ideologies that they want to impose on other people

I thought you wanted me to expound about your personal opinion??? I have investments in The United Fruit Company. If you keep giving me an attitude a "death squad" will pay you a visit. I love bananas!

I think some go into politics to want to change things but then see the endless possibilities to acquire money and power. It's a small minority that really want to help ppl and make the world a better place. I like to think Ron Paul is in that small minority list.

1. Some see the business connections they can make for later on.
2. Some want to make a difference but once they get in they see "the system" will never be changed in their lifetime so they give in to the party line and revert to #1.
3. Some want to make a difference but once they get in they see "the system" will never be changed in their lifetime so they just get out after 1-2 terms.

Some go in because they get off on power, some have personal agendas and others genuinely want to "make a difference" (which, if you really think about it, is usually just a slightly more passive aggressive form of getting off on power/manipulation). There's really no other reasons for people to enter public office.

I suspect the ones who go in for altruistic reasons are inevitably forced to compromise their ethics because of the way Washington operates ("you scratch my back/I'll scratch yours") and the ones who just want power don't have any ethics to begin with.

I signed up to be a poli-sci major in college bc people told me I should be one growing up.

Poli-sci sucked so I changed majors almost immediately...a few times. :D

Over the course of a lifetime your major means dick. Its the fact you got a degree that matters more ultimately.

I agree with you for the most part except for the few majors that directly correlate to specific jobs.

i think that's pretty irresponsible advice to give someone who's about to enter college.

you are going to be a lot more attractive to employers and graduate schools if you had a math-intensive major like engineering

I said over the course of a lifetime.
How many career changes dies the average person have over their life? 7 or 8 or something?
Its not like it used to be where you go to school, get a job directly using your major, work at the same place doing the same thing all your life, then die.

most adults don't even have a college degree, and lot of the ones that do have it in complete bs. so i don't think your stat for the average person is very compelling.

you look at people with engineering or physics degrees, and yea it played a huge role in life for tons of them

I'm currently working in the field I got a degree in. Just sayin.

But my sister (almost, maybe, any day now if she passes Spanish) has a degree in English. Good fucking luck with that, sis.

I could have earned a better compensation package
as a public bus driver in Wisconsin

I think the lower half of america is destroying america
and i fear i may live long enough to witness it

I was a national merit finalist at age 17
one in 500
what does that mean?
it means you out think the four that are 1 in a 100

Hard science or engineering degrees yes. I know the average person doesnt have a degree but for the average person with a degree, over the course of their lifetime it doesnt matter which major. The fact that they simply gave a degree is what matters as opposed to not. So in that case its a chicken egg scenario, which came first the type of person that gets a degree has a certain life path, or is it the degree that sets their life on a different course than would have ultimately occured?

Odd how regardless of political affiliation, there seems to be a consensus that:

1) Some people enter politics for the right reasons and get diverted or burned-out.

2) Some people enter politics for the wrong reasons from the very start.

So why would anyone of any affiliation want to shove more money at that mess? Shouldn't we be doing massive cuts every single year to everything?

for some people it doesn't end up mattering, and for some it does. but most people start out with a goal in mind, and there is always a certain major or group of majors that best prepares them for that. so you're gonna tell someone "your major doesn't matter because you might end up changing your mind later" ? that is completely ridiculous.

Oddly enough you can say the same things about nearly every service career (i.e., medicine, police, fire, clergy, etc.). Yeah, there's variations, I'm painting in broad strokes here.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? Amazing the power of habit and paradigm thinking.

Right up there with the whole concept of capitalism (or petroleum fuel or pick any outmoded system or method of doing something). Intrinsically it's deeply flawed but we're so used to it and every time someone tries to come up with a better system two things happen:

1. The guy who's making LOTS of money with the existing product points out all the flaws with the new system.

2. People -- who are inherently leery of newfangled ideas -- act like the sheep they are and listen to the guy who says "Fuck the new shit, stay with what's tried and true."

Politicians make reasonable money, have significant status, and receive substantial perks (and it ain't like they have a killer work schedule). People get used to shit like that.

because they are lazy fucks who enjoy doing next to absolutely nothing and getting paid extraordinarily well with the most killer benefits and retirement possible. Add in they get to have control over other people (the minions) and it's a win for them. Yay politicians!

Not at all. There are doctors, professors, policemen and clergy who absolutely love what they do.

The reason capitalism has endured while so many other systems failed is because it works. Sure it needs policing, but that would be true of any system.

And fossil fuels are purely an economic issue. When they develop something new that's cheaper, people will flock to it. A hybrid car's return on investment is between 5 and 30 years -- that's why around only 1 in 3 buyers buy a second one.

Nice hypocritical post. You accuse me of hindering the discussion by "trying" to criticize me. If you wanted to enhance the discussion you should have gave some insightful information, but instead you gave your erroneous opinion that holds no weight. After reading your posts in this thread it is evident you are just regurgitating what a left-wing prof told you.

Playing grammar-Nazi on a roid site is lame. Nevertheless, the syntax in your entire post is horrible and you are not aware of starting a sentence with capitalization. Hence, you don't even possess the grammar skills of a middle school kid.

I advanced and brought clarity to the thread, which I knew people would not understand what I was trying to convey. Therefore, let me explain things so everyone here can understand the point I was trying to make.

There is a difference from a "public servant," and a "politician." Public servants are for the people and politicians are self-serving. I don't care who comes in here and disagrees. If you think you are so brilliant feel free to challenge me to a debate on any social science topic you like. I will gladly shred you to pieces!

If the link fails, I am sure you are smart enough just to google the link. Or just type "Blog of Irreverence: Politician vs. Public Servant."

Blog of Irreverence: Politician vs. Public Servant

everyone understood what lart meant with his thread title, but you thought arguing semantics was more valuable than contributing to the discussion

then, you tried to paraphrase nan's post but completely misconstrued her thoughts - comically throwing in some misused words like "simultaneously" as well.

you didn't clarify shit, and the only thing you tried to "advance" was a reputation as someone who's smarter than everyone else. If you disagree with my answer in the thread then take me up on its shortcomings, otherwise stfu because i provided a thoughtful response while you just gave us self-serving garbage. I guess you could say that i was the "public servant" in this thread while you were the "politician"

no point in debating you because i could care less how smart or dumb you are, or how knowledgeable; all that really matters is how good of a poster you are, and the results already in - you suck.

Physicians are the most likely people to kill themselves (that's among white men).

Among people of color and women, cops make the list, too (you have to read down the article to women and minorities).

The 19 Jobs Where You're Most Likely To Kill Yourself - Business Insider

Like I said, I was talking in generalizations, I admit that and it's not fair to hold me to black and white standards when I'm admittedly talking major gray areas.

If you google professions with the highest suicide rates and go to the pages people in the medical fields (including dentists and pharmacists) consistently rank very high, like #2. People in public service, which includes police, generally are in the top 10 :whatever:

Cops are also more likely than average to be abusive of their spouses.

Service of the public, no matter how well compensated, is not all unicorns farting rainbows, short and sweet.

Of course not. But there are plenty of service people who love their jobs and love what they do.

most people as narcissistic as who now? cause there might not be a single entity on this board more narcissisticaly vaccuous as you. This is literally pot giving kettle a reach around at this point. Was there a moment of time dilation when you typed that as the universe took a collective "moment to reflect" on your statement? Did inanimate objects in your office sort of turn to look at you like "wtf seriously, from you?"

like i'm wondering if the black hole in the middle of the milky way did a double take on that one. Like it wobbled a bit and let a few stars/planets out of it's grasp before it recollected itself and went back about it's business.

well seriously what was he gonna say, no? like there's only so much one can blow it out there ass before you just say, yeah ok i'll take that one. Plus i think he's proud of it. Narcissism is part of his ego, he's fully embraced it. I was just dumbfounded by yet another example of his failing prefontal cortex and it's complete and utter inability to reign in his spending. I'm serious the universe paused for a fraction of a moment to digest that sentence. I would bet anything that had his own wife witnessed that interaction she would have had to cover her mouth and leave the room lest she burst out laughing...i guarantee people around him are keenly aware of his complex.

yes it was completely wild and unsupported...yep just pulled that one right out me arsehole.<---laugh the fuck out loud.

Well, you know the drill (which you'll fail again)...

Please post a single quote from me to support your claim I'm narcissistic.

its evident in your entire attitude from the day you started posting here. Pull up any one of your self congratulating self importantizing posts and i'm sure you have an explanation for it. Posting one thread or another is useless....put all your threads from 5 years together and there's a pattern that cannot be ignored.

Because you want me to post "ONE" single post so we can go over the minutia of that 'ONE" single post. I can hear your arguments now....one post does not prove one's narcissism. YEars and years of posting does. Anyone reading this that has paid attention to you for the last couple years knows you have a complex. THey may not dislike you over it, but people know you're a meme dude.

I didnt read the thread

People go into politics bc they are power hungry and they think they can do better than those currently in those positions. Fact is, none of them are worth anything, they cant fix shit, and we're all fucked.

This....and furthermore you don't get to DC unless people know something about you, like a major skeleton. Without that nobody trusts you that you're down with the whole clown show.

Is that the clinical definition of narcissism? Thanks for the compliment, that means a lot to me coming from a glorified salesman. I know I am interesting, I made this thread that was going nowhere interesting. I provided people with valuable information in relation to politics so they will be able to use it for a future reference. Now, people are able to understand that "politics" is composed of two different entities. Like I said, "I love advancing society," somebody has to do it!

Well, we know that silly college boy just spews out a reflect that was etched on his heart from a communist prof. Therefore, he is disregarded from now on until he is able to do his own thinking.

Considering he does not have the knowledge nor the guts to debate me, do you want some?? I'm ready and I know I will beat you, and beat you bad!
