What is the proper way to do barbell upright rows?

In my first meeting with my surgeon, the first question was what kind of activities do you do. after i said i lift at the gym, he said do you do upright rows? yes... that is why you are here.

after shoulder surgery, during my rehab consultation with the PT, same thing. do you go to the gym? do you do upright rows? never do those again, and never let anyone else you know do them either.

When you guys do barbell upright rows do you bring the bar up to where the elbows and forearms are level to the ground, like seen here:

http://www.exercisedb.com/exercisedatabase/viewanexercise.asp?table=exercises&ID=19

Or do you bring it up higher, like to the chin, as seen here:

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidLateral/BBUprightRow.html

Which way is better for building your lateral delts? Which way is safer for your shoulders?

I do this exercise with a cable, hands about 10" apart, slow up to chin ... hands like hooks with the pull from the elbows.

Pause at top ... no sway or jerking. Hold for count of 1.

8 reps followed immediately with 8 shrugs.

This will hit your side delts and traps.

sounds interesting, is there a diagram on the internet so I can see what you mean?

Agree completely with al (for a change he is always right :P)

But yes, upright barbell rows were never a part of my routine due to the fact that they are bad for the shoulders.

Btw, my best standing military press is 5x5 65kg
I weigh 80kg :(
so yeh, I am weak
