What is HIIT cardio??

I'm just curious, what is hiit cardio. I see some people do it and other say stay away from it. Also I'm trying to lose weight and get a little bit of muscle. I'm 5'5 and weigh about 155. So how many days should I be working out and how much cardio and weight lift should i be doing.

Thanks

HIIT is the best...i do it in the AM on an empty stomach for 25 minutes and its work for me...but i was wondering since im doing it on an empty stomach does the body use only my body fat for fuel or it taps into my muscles?

One of the main reasons to do HIIT is to avoid the early morning cardio, which we all know to be quite catabolic. HIIT uses carbs for energy so doing it first thing in the morning when your glycogen stores are most depleted doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You may think that the body would therefore have to use an alternate source of energy, ie. fat, however, you would be just as, if not more, likely to burn muscle.

Sorry, I don't know that.......neither do the 100's of clients I am getting ripped to shreds.

The only reason cardio is catabolic at all at ANY TIME of the day, is because of the way in which people do NOT understand how to eat around this activity. That is what is catabolic, NOT cardio. Cardio burns fat and only fat IF, that's a big IF, you know how/when to do it correctly, and how to eat throughout the day to remain in a positive nitrogen balance.

Saying cardio is catabolic in empty in the a.m. is a gross generalization.

Ok, that I have to agree with. If done properly, it can elevate anabolic hormones in the body's efforts to offset the catabolic effect in addition to burning bodyfat and speeding up metabolism, but SC is right, the key is timing and knowing what to eat.

I've seen SC's handy work. The guy DEFINITELY knows exactly what he's talking about. Cardio done in the AM on an empty stomach is not catabolic as most would like you to believe. You just have to know how to eat, correctly.
