What Exercises to do for shaping obliques

The only thing Ive ever done ( and not much of ) for obliques are cable or db side crunches ( whatever they are really called ). Are there any better exercises to do. Ive neglected them for too long.

BTW- dont say lose fat, I know. either way I still have nothing there, its completely soft.

Obliques will make your waist wider and promote a thick midsection... be careful training them directly.

HUH?! Bro, I have a sister-in-law, that says she doesn't want to train abs for the same reason..Ergo, she doesn't want her mid-section to get bigger. She has no idea what she is talking about either. I don't know where you are getting these theories of yours, but this one, coupled with your others at the "super setting" Thread, are making me seriously doubt your credibility. As if you could put mass onto your obliques. That's like saying you don't want to do reverse-toe-raises, for fear of bulking up your friggin tibs!! LUDICROUS bro.

Besides the big compound movements, I do some standing dumbell side bends (I call them oblique curls, but I don't think anyone else does). I get up to around 110 on the dumbell.

There's another exercise I used to do that hit them: oblique sit-ups. They were awkward though so I quit doing them.

Obliques are a muscle, like any others. Are you saying only some muscles grow?

What qualifies you to talk about this stuff?

You can't change the shape of a muscle...at least not the way you mean. If it grows it will change shape, but you can't pick what it will look like bigger. Yes, obliques grow. If you are short waisted it may make you look thicker. Get wider shoulders. :)

I've seen some dudes with massive obliques. Although most people aren't going to get them big enough to change their waistline much.

And you can build up your tibialis to make your overall calves look bigger.

well, i dont want them to get big, just hard.

give it time. at 15% bodyfat, you will be soft. wait til you are 8%. plenty hard!

ummm....is it not muscle? do you not see people doing weighted exercises? is this any different than a bicep, deltoid or other muscle? its still muscle that grows under stress. have you ever heard a bodybuilding judge say that someone's midsection was too blocky?

bad analogy.

anterior tibialis doesnt have near the effect on proportion and symmetry as the musculature of the midsection. thats if we are talking from a bodybuilding perspective. plus the anterior tib is a small slender muscle, the obliques are a GROUP of small slender muscles, which by location if its well developed (growth) and under a bit of bodyfat can give the illusion of being out of shape.

One armed farmers kill my obliques. Just pick up a heavy dumbbell or something in one hand and walk around for awhile. then switch hands.

ooh, ouch! great for spinal stabilization too. i'd have to work up to those. ive been training too symmetrically to jump head first into those.
