What exactly does barbell hack squats do?

I watch videos and people at the gym do this and it looks so dangerous and painful for the lower back. What does this do exactly? Does it target the lower back like deadlifts since its a backwards deadlift?

It is primarily a quad developer (as shown in your video).

I wont do them, and I don't know anyone who does. There is just too high of an injury potential.

there is no need for that lift. just cheat the hell out of a super heavy squat or do rack deads.

Would it be ideal to just do front squats or machine hacks? I just can't see myself doing this lift since the back rounds so easily during the movement.

Machine hacks happen to be about the only machine I use.

I am a big fan of front squats.

On a side note, my training buddy did front squats to a box 855x3 last week. He is a friggin animal.

Just conventional rear squats "in the pocket" blasts the bejesus out of quads by shifting the weight a bit more onto the balls of your feet. Loads the quads way more. And prefatiguing them with extensions makes it brutal.

Boxes and "in the pocket" style are like two totally different exercises. I can't really see the need for any of those relatively exotic exercises unless you are a very advanced PL'er or Strongman.

That's one of the big reasons we don't do them. Plus they will hurt you (in a bad way).

...i also believe he credited that towards his injury...

i know but bruce asked who else did them, i wasnt reccomending them. I tryed them once with just 135 to see what they felt like and the bar just kept slammin into my ass lol

Hey while we're on the same topic of hurting ourselves while lifting, is there such a thing as straight legged deadlifts with the lower back rounded?

I saw a guy doing them today with his whole upper and lower back rounded. It wasn't just a little rounded, he was not even trying to straighten it up at all. Granted he was only doing 135 pounds. It looked painful. Is this a type of workout to work your lower spine while it's rounded or is he just misinformed?
