What do you think?

Today I was told that I shouldn't punch "through" the punching bag, but instead pull back after contact, as "that is what boxers do". Opinions?

I think he mean punching "through" means you push after contact. Pushing after a punch if in a match/fight can allow you to lose your balance, or not pull back in time to block. What the guy told you, i think he meant try to pull your arms back once you hit the bag, to block. Yeah, your hit will be weaker in the end, but on contact, it will be the same, if not more, because you will be aiming to exert the most you can on the contact, rather than getting your hand on your opponent, and then "punching".

Yes, they meant "punch through" in the literal sense.

Have you ever walked down a set of stairs, and not realising you were already on the bottom step, took a step and *thumb* goes your leg, with a lot more jarring force than you thought you had in you?

Punching is kindof like that. Punch but envision that your target is behind where you would actually hit. It's surprizingly stronger.

I say this with confidence because I've hit and been hit with this kind of perception held in the mind of the puncher. It's fierce, although I'm still quite new at it. =)
