What Are Your Feelings On Cops?

I know you can't stereotype an entire field of work. Yet so many of these guys are complete fuckheads. I have a group of 60 cops that come down from Ohio as clients of mine and are the coolest guys and biggest partiers I've ever seen. But then again, they aren't working. I was pulled over the other day and forgot to turn my car off. When he started walking up the side of my car he saw me reach up to turn the ignition off and slammed his hand on my trunk and yelled, "Don't move", like I just robbed a bank. I think too many of these fuckers let the cop thing go to their head. What are your feelings on cops?

I could name you lot of lawyers, docs, fireman..... who are assholes. Thing is, some are giving a bad name to the job. Especially the patrol guys. You'll agree that we can't say the same about detectives for example. You dont like them, but you'll be one of the first to beg them to catch the fucker who killed your wife if it ever happens. Anyway thats how life is.

I hear what you are saying. I mean, I just had a not so nice enconter with an off-duty police officer the other day....but I realize that not all of them are assholes. They will be there for you when you need them, they are there for you when you don't need them (like in the case of your speeding ticket). But it is their job to be enforcers of the law.

In reply to the first post. A traffic stop is one of the most dangerous thing a COP does in an already dangerous job. Everyone is treated as armed until proven otherwise. Its called officer safety.

This is 100% correct. It's a difficult job and I'm glad that most of them are on it. As for the guy who recommended that all cops be executed, or a member of his or her family, perhaps you should walk in the shoes of an officer ... or, at the very least, the shoes of an officer's spouse or children. As the son of a 26-year veteran, now retired, of a midwestern state police force (read: many, many routine traffic stops), I speak with authority. My family lived five days of every week with the prospect that my father wouldn't come home alive.

Yes being a Framer is a dangerous job. So is being a Fisherman,and countless other jobs. But being a cop is very dangerous. I havent heard of a " Farming mishap" in quite a long time. i did however attend a Funeral for a Detoit Officer a few weeks back. He was killed on a ROUTINE traffic stop.
The officer was killed by being stabbed in the neck 8 times with a screwdriver. The officer was able to fire off a round and get the little ASSHOLE once. However the ASSHOLE is still gracing our world today!
The officer left behind a 2 month old daughter and a son. The officer was 30 years old....................

i suppose the fact that cops are, in essence, the modern day bullies (those you avoid because they can hurt you if they dislike what you are doing) will naturally make them disliked by those of us who either don't support certain laws or who break certain laws. because i break the law, those close to me break the law, and i don't support 30% of the laws in existence naturally i have animosity towards some of those in law enforcement.

nonetheless, being in police work isn't that dangerous. on average, 160 officers die each year. that is nothing considering that there are 700,000 police officers in america. 1 in 4375 odds of dying each year. i suppose those are a little high. a 30 year career leaves you technically a 1 in 120 chance of dying.

What does it say on the side of the car? To Protect and to Serve? Protect and Serve whom? Even years before I got my first speeding ticket, I had always disapproved of mindless ticket-writing. What is the job of a police officer? To protect the law-abiding public from criminals. Do you know what it means when a cop gives you a ticket? It means he sees you as a criminal.

Homocide investigators or other "real-crime" cops I have a small grain of respect for. Not as much as I should, however, due to how poorly their duties are carried out. If someone you know is murderered, don't expect to find justice, or even find out who, for at least a good year.

Traffic cops? Garbage. I do not believe there is another profession out there whose sole purpose in life is to inconvenience innocent people. Before you mention lawyers, prosecutors are working under the impression that the people they are prosecuting are guilty of grave crimes and are a danger to society. Traffic cops are working under the impression that they need to collect revenue for the city by meeting a specific quota of ticket-writing and inconveniencing otherwise innocent citizens.

I'd rather have a future daughter date a burger-flipper or even a SCHOOL TEACHER than a cop.

"Routine" is normally a euphemism for "trivial and unnecessary." It is always sad to hear of the premature loss of a human life, but perhaps if the Detroit officer were doing something useful while on duty, such as fighting real crime, then he may still be alive today. I don't know about you, but my logic tells me that a person is either guilty or not guilty, a criminal or an innocent person. If a cop writing someone a ticket does not imply that the cop finds that person to be a criminal, then the only logical conclusion would be that the police officer realizes that he is giving a ticket to an innocent person and proceeds to do so anyway.

Lol. Pardon the bluntness, but BS. I have friends who have had perfectly polite, respectful attitudes with cops who have stopped them. Responding with "yes" instead of "yeah," referring to the cop as "officer" or "sir," having license, registration, and proof of insurance ready before the cop reaches the car, etc and have all gotten tickets without fail for petty offenses. I was victim to the same.

Now, let's think back to the cop a few weeks ago who made a left turn from the incorrect lane through a redlight and almost caused a 3-car accident.

Thank heavens there was another police officer nearby who stopped the offending cop and gave him several tickets - yeah, RIGHT!

to be fair to poon daddy it would be understandable if he were an asshole, which he isn't. If 95% of the public don't want you around, or maltreat you (the same people who will call on you if their house is broken into or their wife is raped) it would be understandable that they develop a hatred for the public at large for it.

I lack respect for the majority of cops because many of them, perhaps the majority of them, dont take the job to protect and serve. Rather, they take the job because they get to wear a gun and be a "cop".

Cops will enforce laws on citizens they rarely, if ever, enforce on other cops who committ the same violation.

Proof? Cops arrest and charge people for drug possession all the time. Im sure some are heros, and hey, its a tough job, but guess what. Cops *choose* their line of work. A police officers major responsibility is to treat the law abiding public with respect. This is the whole SERVE element of the 'protect and serve' law enforcement philisophy. Cops work for the public, not the other way around.

I have no reason to lie about anything. The argument that you originally made (and punctuated above) was that writing ALL tickets was mindless. I made no such concurrence. If you have exceeded the speed limit or have operated your vehicle in an unsafe manner according to the law, issuing you a citation is not, necessarily, mindless. Can it be? Yes. Are there times when it is not? The answer, again, is yes. This is called discretion. And like I said, many things can influence discretion. It's no different than it is at your job.

And because one cop having a bad day pulled Dude over does not mean that his job is necessarily oriented around generating revenue or harrassment. Assume the opposite for a moment, that cop was having a good day and let Dude go ... an event just as likely. Where is the revenue generation and harrassment?

All people who are arrested are innocent by definition. I'm not sure why you have an issue with this.

Take it easy. First, yes, I meant it. I want them all to die. Have I had a bad experience with the law? Yes. In fact I have had about 20 bad experiences with the law, maybe 5 of which deal with traffic stops. I have had these experiences in various locations. I have never had a good experience with the law. Worse, when I have intentionally broken the law, where were the cops then? Nowhere to be found. They don't bother whites with plenty of cash, when we want to do stuff.

The idea of law enforcement is a good one in theory, but it has de-evloved into the lowest common denominator: deployment of maximum cops to achieve maximum revenue: emphasis on traffic stops. This is basically "nuisance policing". After all, pursuing and arresting real criminals doesn't make any more for the state/city/county/town. But stopping speeders on a rural Interstate, well, that's real dollars. The hypocrisy is amazing.

Some cops actually do make some decent salaries, especially combined with off duty work. Long Island cops are among the highest paid in the country, and what a bunch of ungrateful pricks. Now I am in FL and I see the same shit.

This is changing to a significant degree. The state police agency my father retired from required a Bachelor's degree in any field or an Associate's in Criminal Justice before entry into the academy. That was 10 years ago and I don't know what the requirement is now.

There was a cop lifting at my gym and I heard him bragging about "kicking people's asses". I know one cop that told me he couldn't wait to get a chance to shoot someone. Less than a year after he got out of the academy he shot an unarmed 16 year old boy in the back because he was running from him. I know a few cops and I grew up with them so I saw the before and after and they did not get swelled heads.However they all have told me time and time again that they had been pressured to back up fellow cops even if they had done something terrible.The blue curtain exists and they are a brotherhood like it or not. I have been following the story in california about the rogue cops who set up hundreds of kids , planting evidence, shaking down drug dealers and prostitutes and sending many innocent people to prison! why become a cop ? lets put the old "to serve the community" on the side. For the pay-check my friend. An investigator (with the sergeant-detective rank) can make from 30 000$ to 58 000$ (after 5 years of service) a year. Of course you can make more with promotions. I don't think cop would be a top career choice. I'm thinking engineer, laywer, doctor, IT professional, are all much better picks.

I know a lot of guys on my football team aspired to be in law enforcement. I think they craved an athmosphere of male comeraderie more than anything else. I don't think those guys are bad people, but at the same time I don't think they are thinking of other people first. I think they wanted to do it because they figured it was a good fit for their personality, or they had a relative in the force, or figured it was easy or cool.

I also know one thing: I wish I knew more cops or had lots of local cops in my family. I hear stories all the time how family members of cops get these special cards they carry around with them and if they ever get pulled over they just show the card and get waved on.
