What A Top Westsider thinks about Metal Militia

Dave Tate's Training Journal: August 10th, 2003:

My goals for the meet were to first get to 275 and then hit a top ten total. I figured that to be in the 2150 range. While this did not happen many good things did.

I made weight at 274. I should have ate more on the day before weight ins and I could of steamed off two or three pounds.

Squats
Equipment - Metal Briefs and my old Frantz squat suit.
Warm Ups
135 with briefs
245 with briefs
335 with briefs
445 with briefs
535 with briefs and canvas straps down
625 with briefs and canvas straps down

Opener
775 - Just about killed me setting it up (nothing new!) Came up with it pretty eazy.
835 - Had a worse time setting up. Shaking like crazy (nothing new). I took it straight down and fell over in the bottom.
850 - Same as the 835.
* I still think my training went very well. I always shake except when I weight 310 I can recover by sitting onto my belly. When I tried to do this, my belly was not there and my leverage was all messed up. I will now have to figure out how to fix this shaking problem. We already have several things we will do. This will not happen again because I know I can squat 850-875 if I can set it up and sit back into it.

This pretty much screwed my total up so I decided to try something different with my bench. Since Bill Crawford was there and I have had problems getting a shirt to work, I took the chance to have him help me out. My goal was anything over 560 (560 was my PR at 275).

Warm Ups
45 for 3 reps
95 for 3 reps
135 for 3 reps
185 for 1 rep
225 for 1 rep
275 for 1 rep
405 for 3 reps with shirt (did not touch)
455 for 2 reps with shirt 9did not touch)
495 for 1 rep with shirt (very close)

Opener Karin Kline shirt
560 - killed it, but my ass came up.
610 - tried to tuck legs way back and had balance problems. Missed at the top because the bar ran into the rack
610 - Good lift - maybe 10-20 left. If I hit it like I should it willbe a hell of alot more.

Bill made a huge difference and I have never had a shirt feel this way. I have had on atleast 30 shirts in the past three years and I just learned it is not the shirt but HOW YOU USE the shirt.

**** Before you guy all start killing me with questions like "what did he have you do?", and "what did he do to the shirt?", I have to tell you there is no way to tell you this. You have to see it and do it. You have never heard me say anything bad about what they do while at the same time you have never heard me say anything good either (with the exception of them being strong as hell). The reason for this is unless I see it first hand I do not wnat to comment on it. Well, this is comming first hand. Get you ass to one of his seminars! You can find more information at:

If you want a bigger bench you will find your way there. I am not sure of the cost and yes I know there are travel expenses, but ask you self this. How much have I spent on bench shirts in the past few years that gave me nothing?

Bill, thanks for the help! I know no whaty I have to do and I will try to make out to see you soon.

Deadlifts
warm ups
135 for 2 sets of 1
225 for 1
315 for 3 sets 1

Opener
600 - No need to comment on this mess of a lift. I pulled it (kinda) but was red lighted
670 - good
705 - miss

Total 2055

Even with a crap squat I beat my PR total in the 275 by 15 pounds and had a 50 pound 275 bench PR as well as a 5 pound all time bench PR. This total also was 15 over what I did last meet where I weighed 310. Yes, nutrition can make a huge difference! I am not back yet but am on the right road now. The best news about the meet. No new injuries!

I will now take some time off to finally rest and fix my back and then gear up for something in January or Febuary. I would like to hit and bench meet somewhere in between as I am fired up about the shirt.

I also want to thank Bob Youngs and Todd Brock for helping me out this weekend.

dave is a real open minded guy when he sees a good thing he will use it. when he and Bill C. and Mule get together watch out because his bench will be phenominal

Missed you there Mule, those damned PA laws about buying beer only at bars or the state store pissed me off after I bombed Sunday... later.

i really liked what i saw from the naz/militia guys. they remind me alot of the guys at my gym, they have a passion for the sport and want everyone to succeed and lift bigger weights. Mule is a very cool SOB, not to mention the worlds largest strength athelete, haha had to say it. it was great meeting you, cant wait till the next time.

I consider myself very lucky to have the crew I do. We have about 20 lifters all toll and they are all like family the gym is a tight nit group and lots of fun...Liftbig thanks for the props hope to see you in sept.

i wont be able to make it do the seminar, i think i may be taking care of some buisness at a bench meet on sept 13. will you be at the IPA nats in november, ill be lifting there again.
