I was home with the kids. It's starting to snow outside. I turned on the pellet stove, and within minutes it turned itself off and smelled like burning wood.

a few minutes later, we realize it's smokey in the living room and REALLY smells like smoke. So i open the door to the stove and there is smoke POURING out. Billowing out. i shut the door as fast as i could.
the living room is now really bad, and smoke is pouring out of the vents of the stove.

panic time. I call my husband (he's away) and i can't get the words out fast enough that I think the chimney is on fire. My son comes downstairs and together we disconnect the back of the stove and spray the fire extinguisher up into it.
it shoots right back into the living room (which is now smokey and dusty).

It didn't work. I go outside and shine a spotlight onto the chimney and smoke is pouring out of it.
My son gets the ladder and climbs up the chimney while me and his gf hold the ladder. he takes the fire extinguisher and goes to shoot it down the chimney and it's empty.
in the meantime, my neighbor came over to see if she should call the fire dept. The living room wasn't getting any more smoke but it was come out of the chimney FAST.
So my son climbed back up with two soda bottles filled with water and poured it down.

everything is good now. my house is bad smokey, and the fireplace is filled with that white extinguisher stuff and water, but no more smoke. i had to dust the whole living room.

oh, and my neighbor who was here? left her kid here to sleep over. wtf? like I don't have enough going on, i need your son here on a weekday because he can't be home alone for 15 minutes??? He's going into high school next year.

Holy shit! Guess you gotta call a chimney sweeper?
Glad you are alright

with a modular chimney and a woodstove, you close all the vents/dampeners and wait...

make sure no sparks throw onto the roof to light it, but the chimney will keep it contained...its an crazy loud freightrain sound tho, and nerve wracking

this has happened a few times at the ex's house

Id probably fricken freak if it was a brick or otherwise stone chimney
and i dont know jack about pellet stoves besides...augers...pilots...and other such extraneous shit

glad everythings ok

i was worried about sparks, but the roof is covered in snow and ice so i figured it was safe.
everything is fine now. the house smells like a fireplace. :)

wow, good thing you all acted so fast!! glad to hear you're OK

Well-done! Had he not put that out, I bet it would have eventually radiated enough heat through the flue to light the house frame afire. I don't know what happened in your case, but around SoCal, we have big problems with rats & mice builiding nests in furnaces and chimneys during the summer, and then the house burns down the first time someone turns the heat on. I always inspect the furnaces before we start them for the first time of the season, and I maintain wire nets over all of the roof vents and over any openings in the furnace housings in the attic.

god, thats impressive, the new insulated mod chimneys are rated for a little over 3000 degrees
and theyre 6 inches from any wood structure...theyre hot, but not hot enough to light anything

scarey shit! glad the new stuff is safer
