well...i made the switch to vista

i received a free copy of vista from my university's MSDNAA, so i figured i would try out the new operating system, especially since my laptop was in dire need of a formatting.

well, the installation went without a hitch...so far, so good.

i booted into my new OS for the first time, and it looked much nicer than my xp pro. it also booted faster, and applications opened much quicker.

however, i have had some problems.

1. this operating system will not let you take a shit unless you give it permission to do so. everytime you open up some 'unknown' application, you get a warning asking if you are sure you want to open it. sounds nice, sounds secure...but it is fucking annoying.

2. you have to set different user levels and permissions for a lot of programs. i tried to run some of my favorite applications, and some of them simply would not work...after fucking around with them for 2 hours, i realized i didn't give the program enough authority to run. that is highly fucking annoying, setting flags for each, individual piece of software.

3. upnp port mapping is a BITCH. i needed to open some ports, and regardless of what i did (manually forward ports, add port exceptions to my firewall, turn off my firewall, use upnp, try different ports, turn off dht, etc) i could not get my ports to open. in fact, whenever i tried to simply test the port, it would KILL my entire connection until i closed out said program.

i finally got so pissed i was ready to format...but i had to eat, so i left it alone for an hour. and guess what? when i came back, all of my ports were magically working. it looks like vista does some weird shit with upnp, because when i later connected to my router to check if any devices were using upnp, it had every different port i tried as being up and running...even when i had closed out the program. it's really fucking weird.

4. the layout takes some getting used to. there is no longer a start menu like so many of us have been used to since windows 95. instead there is a list that you have to scroll up and down in the start menu.

aero is so overrated it's not even funny. i dont see what the big deal is. i would rather have my open programs displayed on the task bar than i would want them in some stupid graphical scrolling shit.

it really takes some getting used to.

5. i havent had any problems with audio or video yet, but that doesn't say much, considering i only listened to one song and backed up one movie i had just purchased. supposedly the amount of DRM built into vista is a real bitch, but thank god it has already been cracked.

in the end, it is definitely a nice OS. it definitely runs faster than my xp pro system did, even after a clean install. however, this OS still has a shitload of bugs and problems that need to be updated.

i am running it on a dual core 2.16 ghz, 2 gigs ram, 120 gig HD laptop.

1 & 2 can be turned off search for the answer... I just read someone bitching about it the other day and the article had the instructions. I leave it on, it doesn't pop up often enough during what I do to piss me off - YET.

3 - who knows, that's odd.

I am still waiting on WHQL SLI drivers for dual 8800's... when Nivida does that, I'll make vista my primary.

Are you running 32 or 64?

I have 64 installed on both XP and Vista - but fuck if peeps don't ever test their shit on 64.. and 64 drivers are really 32's wrapped up in some 64 code - which slows everything down.

I am seriously considering going back to 32...

i am running 32 bit...even though i could be running 64.

right now, i don't see a reason to go 64. no vendors are putting out enough drivers to make it worth my time and hassle. they figure the majority of people will be using 32.

but i dont know about vista...i think it might be the next windows ME. why? because microsoft is releasing a new OS in 2 years. bring back memories of the whole windows ME, 2000, and XP? didn't those three OS' come out within months of each other?

windows 2000 - feb 2000
windows ME - sep 2000
windows xp - oct 2001

who knows, vista might be the next ME

Eh...

ME was a flop partially because of the release date...

but also... most home computers were not sold with 2k, because the idea was that 2k was for business environments where as ME was made for home..

Vista is a built to be a universal desktop like XP...

2000 / 2003... Server Platforms.

how do you rate it compared to xp? sure, right now there are going to be bugs and lack of supported software and drivers...but after that gets all cleared up.

I try not to get too caught up in that.

It is pretty.

It will be the platform of choice for all new development.

That's all I can really worry about.

Like or not, you're going there.

It's like MACs... don't really care.. they are two small of a faction for me to deal with. They might be better.. hell, I like linux OS's better... does it matter? Nope... my customers use Windows - 99% of the world uses windows. That's where it's at. That's where hardware is cheapest, thats where the MOST software development takes place.

Chewy... Dell is supposed to be having a 25% off (that's huge) sale on their laptops soon if not already. It won't last long... check out engadget.com for details.. if not there gizmodo.com... not sure which one...

P0ink how much did that laptop run you?

i bought it back in july. dell had a 2 day, 35% off sale on this notebook, so i picked it up.

i customized it to the max, and i ran the bill up to $4,800

well, i got 35% off + 15% (military discount) + $400 in rebates.

so, i spent a little more than $2,000 for it.
