Weak on squats?

Hellbore

Hey guys. I have been lifting for about 6 weeks now. My upper body has been making good progress. I have gone from 225 max bench to 275 max bench. Unfortunately, the gym I have been going to doesn't have a squat rack and also doesn't have bumper weights for doing dead lifts.

So, yesterday I went to a new gym and did some squats. I also had someone there teach me how to do clean & jerk. It's funny, I thought the "jerk" part would be the hardest, but it wasn't... I found that if I could clean the weight, I could jerk it.

Anyway I noticed my legs seem really weak compared to my chest. See I am thinking 275 is pretty strong for bench, but the most I was able to squat was 185 3 times!

Also the most I was able to clean & jerk was 175 3 times. I was a little tired, maybe if I was fresh it would be more, but still...

So I am looking at the max chart for my nephew, and his bench max is 295, so only 20 pounds more than me, but he squats like 400 pounds and can power clean 275 pounds. So he benches 20 pounds more than me but can power clean 100 pounds more and squat 215 more than me!

Anyway all this gives me the idea that my upper body must be out of proportion with my legs, when it comes to strength.

Is this going to be a problem or is it normal for someone who is just starting these lifts? I am kinda worried that I did so poorly on cleans and squats when other lifts like bench press, rows, etc. have always come more naturally for me. Can I ever catch up to my nephew ?

If you're new to 'em they're gonna be tough. Give it some time before you worry about ti, especially the more complex lifts like cleans.

Are you going nice and deep?

ON the squats? Yeah I'm going down as far as my knees can bend.
