Probably just the rumor mill. I also missed work due to sinus surgery for about a month. All kinds of rumors were flying all around. I had a return date from my employer and did not need to keep in touch with them. I just came back on that day. And like you said if they did fire you you'd get a pretty nice pay day!
I called the head of HR and he told me my job is secure. I asked why they are trying to replace me with a new person and he said because he wasn't sure when I was coming back.
They know when I'm coming back and there is already another buyer from another plant doing my job.

I have lupus and lyme disease and was ill for a while and never missed a day.
The last year I got worse and was going to work really ill and one morning I passed out while driving to work and knew it was time to take sick leave.
I took leave for 3 months, then went back part time. Well the insurance did not like me working part time so after 4 weeks told me to work full time or go back on disability full time.
I went back full time for 4 months and my health was getting worse, so I decided to take the time I needed.
My job is not physical at all. I sit at a desk all day

Hell ya! It would be totall illegal to fire me while on disability.

My mom was let go 3 days after her medical leave ended for a blown-out ACL with reconstructive surgery. 26 years for the same company and the 5th highest rated employee in the company...in the entire U.S.
They gave her a poor performance report and used some B.S. excuse. It was done for salary reasons but they still knew exactly what they were doing.
